Newark Interview and Oath question

Hi Everybody,

Myself and my wife got interview notice @ Newark on 07/16. But my wife is travelling to India on same day (07/16) evening . Initially we thought of postponing the trip. But after speaking to couple of friends, we thought of exploring the option of attending the interview on 07/16 and taking oath after return from India. Normally in Newark, they do both interview and oath on the same day.

We took an infopass to inquire about this possibility and the lady in the Newark infopass desk (3rd flr) said that it is possible to take oath on a separate day if you pass the interview. She asked us to mention the travel plans to the officer on interview day and request for scheduling oath on another day after passing interview. But for some reason, we weren't 100% sure if this can be done. If we wait till the interview day (flight on the same day evening), and if the oath is not scheduled for another day, we may risk losing the entire ticket fare.

Any suggestions / experiences from the forum members in this regard will be extremely useful.

Let the officer know your travel plan and see if they can accommodate your request for a convenient oath date.

In my opinion, it is best to get done with this highly important citizenship matter before worrying about losing a ticket. And to the best of my knowledge, almost all airline tickets (even the heavily discounted tickets with no refunds) can be rescheduled (refunds are impossible) by paying just $200.

The more you try to tell USCIS what to do the more delays you will have.

Change the travel plan if you can. You can get US passport inn few weeks. It is better to travel with US passport. Finish the process before you travel if you can. I wouldn't delay aquiring US passport for any not so important reason.

Well, with a US passport they would need a visa/PIO/OCI. It's all going to take a long time in total, so if the trip is REALLY important, take documentation with you to the interview. Otherwise, definitely take care of business here and then go.

help

I saw on USCIS website that N-400 needs to be sent to Vermont center, but I live in Harrison, NJ and is supposed to have Newark as my processing center. How is this going to work? I see everyone is talking about Newark? Also I saw a few posts (one from Citi08) it seems that the time between application and interview is only 4 months...is that so? I appreciate your help.

Vermont is the service center and really the processing center that handles the receipt, data entry, completing all necessary checks on the application, scheduling the interview, and forwarding the file to the local office. Newark is the local office or district office which will conduct the actual interview for the N-400 and adjudicate or decide on the outcome.

Regardless of where people live, they have to first submit their application to a service center that serves their state - and after all the required steps have been taken on the application - it is sent to their local office for completion.

Hope this explains the process to you.
