New Travel rules can i re-enter USA with my green card or do i need a passport?

ya i d like to get a passport but i dont have the required non expired id to get a new passport ergo being stuck.

I would check out the Canadian rules for passports; I believe that they are changing this month and a lot more forms of ID are becoming acceptable, including expired passports. I do not know the specifics but it is worth checking them out on Passport Canada's web site.

Air Canada told me that I needed Photo ID "like a drivers license" (of my 5 year old) for my 5 year old to travel within canada. Not too bright they are. I got to the airport without that obviously, and they never even asked for his birth certificate, or my ID.

Now ANYONE who has a valid canadian passport can be a guarantor, so all you need is your birth certificate, green card as photo ID with a signature, and anyone who had a passport to sign for you in order to get one.

It also says on the border and customs website very clearly about AIR travel. "Legal Permanent Residents of the U.S. may re-enter on their I-551 Permanent Resident Card." and on the other site it says.

" •October 1, 2007 - The departments of State and Homeland Security reestablish the valid passport requirement for air travel to / from Canada, Mexico the Caribbean and Bermuda.

U.S. lawful permanent residents will continue to be able to use their Alien Registration Card (Form I-551) issued by the Department of Homeland Security or other valid evidence of permanent residence status to apply for entry to the United States."

again i have spoken to numerous agents and they are all saying emphatically if i show up at the airport without pp they will deny me and they said greencards are being denied boarding....as little as they know ifthey are telling me this unanimously i tendtobeleive em.

as for the lpr statement above it is vaguely attached to the oct 1st rule change...
whoever came up with these rules etc is an idiot because nobody seems toknow when or what is to be implemented.Unbeleivable incompetence.

Play it on the safe side. Get your passport if you can.

It's like the DMV, the website says NOA's (I-797) are enough to establish legal presence. Yet many clerks deny NOA's some accept it. That's how I got my DL.

Don't take the risk of purchasing a plane ticket and then getting denied.

Hope it works out.

I believe that is exactly what the OP is trying to do.

jnj - it looks like you might have a difficult time getting on a plane for a flight back to Canada without a passport - even though the rules are setup to allow you to use other ID. Unfortunately, there is not much any of us can do to help that and it will be your choice whether you want to attempt it or not.

But - as for getting your new passport. You can get a new passport by filling out the forms, getting a guarantor and sending it in. It used to be that you could courier the forms to Canada and you'd have it back in 20 business days, but I found out over the summer that it can now take months if you mail it in. But you might not have a choice.

Depending on *how* expired your passport is, you can use that as ID to get a new one. I did that this past summer. My passport had expired 2 months earlier and they accepted it as proper ID.

Every time in my life that I have flown out of Canada to the US I am checked at customs BEFORE boarding the airplane, and US customs is not Air Canada. I check in at Air Canada and THEN proceed through customs before going to my gate. My parents just did it, coming here, and they showed Air canada nothing, they only showed ID when they went through customs before leaving Canada as well.

I assume you will be going through it AFTER landing then? You need to make sure when you go through Customs, because if you go through it before boarding, then it's US Customs you deal with and not air Canada. Once through customs, they can't tell you to not board if you have photo ID, and if they do, it's easily argued since you've already gone through customs who are the ones that have the say whether you can enter the US or not.

I guess it all depends on the airports you fly in and out of.
