New TN for new company - old TN expiring soon

My husband will be going to the border soon to get the TN for a new job. The only problem is that his old TN will be expiring early next month. Is this going to be an issue? He's worried that the border guards will deny the new TN and deny him re-entry on his current TN since it is about to expire.

Also, would it be better for him to go to the Canadian border or the Mexican border? We're about half way between the two.

Maybe we're just being paranoid, but I'm hoping someone will have some feedback on this.

he can enter on the old TN up to the last day; it would be good to carry proof that he is still employed there, though.

You generally need an appointment for mecican border, and you can't fly to Mexico and do it (it will be done at your home airport on the way back), so take your pick.

He's just worried that they'll be jerks and deny him re-entry AND the new TN. We've had problems before, due to shoddy paperwork.

A recent paystub would be sufficient to prove he is still employed by the first company, right?
