new political landscape

This is a new political landscape in the United States this morning. The Republican Party has captured control of both houses of Congress.

There will be new immigration chairmen in the Senate as well the House.

Why do you guys think this will mean for immigration and asylum policies? In my opinion the INS will be transferred to a new Homeland Security Department--and soon.

Not very good news!

Lets accept the fact that the republicans are more "stuck up" and they do not generally favor immigration as do democrats. John Ashcroft is very accentric and we all know that. INS is a mess right now and new commissioner still need to be appointed. INS will be a part of "so-called" Department of Home Land Security to screw immigrants.

In general, I believe that immigration policies will be stricter and that would have a profound effect on Asylum as well. I have heard cases of various people who have been refused asylum after Sept11, when many were granted asylum on similar basis before. And Congress is not expected to take any action soon on 10K limit on Asylees. So even after going through strenuous process of Asylum seeking, you would endure another challenge of securing a green card and wait many many years;

And trust me on that, Repulicans will make every effort to make immigration a misery.

Thats all I have to say!
Thanks

Re: Not very good news!

I think we shouldn`t be panicky after all even when US was governed by Democrats nothing really was done to improve Immigration issues.Lets not be negative with the republicans after all it`s under Bush`s presidentship that things have started to be in motion in terms of processing cases with INS. I know there is going to be so many changes like dragging INS under Homeland security and more restrictions on immigrants which we all agree was prompted because of immigrants with diabolical mentalities, like those who involved themselves on 9/11.Despite of all that i believe that the Bush`s Government will be able to understanding enough not to make immigration a harsh territory for immigrants. They know that no matter what sooner or later we will be sworn in as American citizens and they also know that each vote counts.

Senator Sam Brownback is slated to replace Ted Kennedy as chair of the Senate Immigration Subcommittee. Brownback has shown a lot of sympathy toward refugee issues.

On the House side, Chairman George Gekas (PA) was one of the few Republicans who lost last night. He had a restrictionist bent. Let us hope that the House leadership will pick someone more like Brownback as head of the immigration subcommittee.

I agree with what has been said so far . You would think it would be a Democrat who would even think of giving amnesty to Mexcians in the US, for example. It was in fact, Bush's idea.

Let's face it ...the INS is a mess. Me and the LA (legal assistant) who I work with on my INS matters, along with my lawyer, like to refer to the "S" in INS as Scamartists!

I just hope that the new INS or what ever it ends up becoming, will make a smooth transition and learn from the failures of the INS.

meLIBERTY2,

Nobody knows if the new agency will work in the long term, but the transition is not going to be smooth if you think about it. They are going to jam many agencies (INS, Secret Service, Coast Guard, Customs and so on) into one brand new cabinet department. They are also doing this on a quick timetable. There will be pain in the process and we will be worse off.

One of the main reasons why i prefer republicans is they don`t beat around the bush.If they(Republicans) decide to make new policies pertaining immigration whether it`s negative or positive, we will get to know it and get over with it.But with Democrats things are dragging on and on and on.However much they want things to change, they don`t have the tools to implement anything.I myself like the majority of immigrants am pro Democrats but if you ask me what the Democrats have done to help immigrants,I have no answer. But if you ask me about Reps,I will tell you that now i`m able to check my case status on internet,I know approximately when i will get my GC if things don`t change,Reps co-sponsored for H.R.3894 & H.R.4078.They(Reps) have played better politics than the Dems and don`t be suprised when the Reps win the hearts of the immigrants. This is Americas politics it`s also in best interest that INS issues are taken care off once and for all.I believe Bush`government will be able to remove most if not all of the bottlenecks in INS.All we have to do is to pray anything is possible.

Rep, Representative? Republican?

The House bill's cosponsors of course are all House Representatives. Here Rep is Representative, not Republican.

Lawsuit

The maximum use of asylee adjustment quota, unrestricted Social Security Card for asylees, the avoidance of repeating EAD applications and other improvements for asylees come from PRESSURES. The asylee adjustment lawsuit played a major role for these improvements.

On one hand Democratic Party traditionally is more friendly toward immigrants than Republic Party does, on the other hand a Republican controlled congress is more effecient to churn out legislations with a Republican president. The right way to lobby this issue is to make it non partisan, or bi partisan. It's neither Democratic issue nor a Republican issue. Make it a human rights issue, an American issue.

Your congressmen are your representatives. Yes, they represent the People, not only people who can vote. They represent you. Talk to them or their staff. Make your concerns clear and compelling. It's their job to lisenten to you and change the policy for you. Use your energy and time constructively.

President Bush says today that his top goal is creating a Homeland Security Department. He asks Congress to address this issue during the upcoming lameduck session (instead of waiting until next year).

It seems like we can say goodbye to the INS as we know it.

Republicans are bad news

I had a chance to look at all the comments made about this new Republican era. I am extremely pessimistic about these new events. Not only that Republicans are xenophobes by nature, they are biased against the new form of immigrants that are people of color. Most of asylee, I believe, are people of color and thus there is a little chance that these grass-root Republicans would care about them or attempt to improve their conditions. The Republicans’ motto is: “Americans first” but they do not understand that we deserve to be Americans the same way their ancestors did. They promote in their campaigns a sick idea that immigration should be stopped because new immigrants are taking away jobs from Americans. I apologize if I am smart enough and if I can not help but compete with Americans. I apologize because I am not on welfare the same way many generations of American families are. Shoot me for it! My continuous saga with the INS will continue as long as there is an anti-immigrant sentiment in this nation. I love this country so much but I am getting extremely scared here and the latest news about Republicans had depressed me so much. God help us

I strongly disagree with this kind of reasoning. Many members of the Republican Party (including the President in my opinion) are very pro-immigrant. Also, the Party's pro-growth, low-tax, small government, and robust national defense tenets resonate with many immigrants. I am very pleased that President Bush's hard work has been recognized this week by the American people.

If Mr bush was pro immigrants,he would have exercised his executive privilege by authorized more than 10.000 visa for I-485 adjustments, knowing the fact that a bunch of us have been waiting for many years for our cases to be processed and that only 10.000 visa are nothing but tips in the iceburg. In the end we will prevail as long as we still have chances to voice our concerns.I know they don`t want to hear people begging for visas, they might be flippant by ignoring us but we will, through all channels creep our concerns and have them echoing in their eardrums.

I do not know from where did you get the idea, but Bush has NO "executive privilege" to permit more than 10,000 asylee adjustments per year. The ceiling is imposed by law.
