Never notified USCIS of change of address

I am in the process of obtaining my 10-year greencard. We moved out of my wife’s parents’ house to our new address about three months ago, but forgot to notify USCIS of our change of address. What are the consequences of this? I have read that this is a misdemeanor crime. Is it really true that a person can be fined or go to jail for this? Has anyone actually ever been convicted for this? Or is it something that is just a technicality that is never really made a deal of? Thanks for any help.

Do it now. It is a technicality by itself but it was used a couple of times to actually deport somebody who "got off" of criminal charges/convictions on some other "technicality".

The worst consequence is when you get denied adjustment merely because you did not get an appointment notice or a request for evidence, and in the Removal Proceedings context, an in absentia removal order will not be reopened if YOU failed to provide a current address.

Failing to provide current address may lead to
a missed appointment
denied adjustment
not receiving NTA (Notice to Appear)
failing to show up for Removal Proceeding Hearings
ordered removed in absentia
no recourse to reopen removal proceedings
an ICE Detainer
ICE detention
Actual Physical Removal from the U.S.
