Never filed an income tax return as have never been employed

I'm in the process of completing form N-400. I have lived as a permanent resident in the USA for five years.

I have never been employed since living in the USA so I have never filed an income tax return. I checked the IRS website 'Do I Need to File a Tax Return?' and this indicated that I was not required to file and I have talked with an accountant who backed that up.

I am financially comfortable.

Do I need to provide any type of documentation from an accountant to confirm I do not need to file a tax return when submitting Form N-400, or is my word that I have never worked and do not need to file enough?

What would you do if someone is telling you he is living in the country for 5 years, never worked and is "financially comfortable"?

I would expect that they put your application under review and send the IRS behind you to figure out what is going on.

I understand that to you my situation seems suspicious, but it's really simple. I have money so I have never needed to work in the USA and since I've traveled extensively - been to all 50 states in the USA, I decided, and my husband also decided, we wouldn't work. Even the IRS accepts this can be the case for some people. In fact the IRS website allows an individual to clarify their tax status online. Just not sure this would be enough confirmation for N-400.

Nothing is "going on" and "financially comfortable" is a very common term.

You are not required to file a return if you dont have income. The IO will surely ask you what you do for a living since you will not list any jobs, for which you will have to show proof of assets and funds to demonstrate how you fund your lifestyle. Make sure you take your bank statements, property papers, etc with you to prove that you can support yourself and you should be fine.

Thanks Dedo, I was thinking this may be the way to approach it. I will also submit a letter from my Accountant confirming his assessment that I am not required to lodge an income tax return.

Another thing got me wondering. Assuming that you are living off your wealth, that wealth is accruing interest and growing, right? And I am also assuming it is a sizeable growth each year if you can live off it. So, its odd that you do not have to report any gains on your tax return. Even if the money is parked overseas and growing there, you have to declare world wide income in the US as a GC holder. I am sure you already know all this...but i am just thinking out loud

That's what I said and I assume that money from overseas is involved and there was never an FBAR sent.
