Hey

I was wondering if anyone could provide assistance.

I'm currently in the US on F-1 but I would like to renew my recently expired B2 visa (in case I can't find a job on OPT or get H1B next year when my F1 expires). Is it possible for me to apply for the new B2 visa here in the US or do I have to go back to the consulate nearest to my home country?

Thanks in advance.

Visa expiry is not important. When you feel your current status is expiring, (graduation, out of work on OPT etc.) then you can apply for change of status to Visitor category using form I-539.

Thanks for the response.

The thing is I don't want to change my status. I'd rather have both now because when my F1 expires in August 2010, I don't want to risk not being able to get a B2 at all so that's why I'm wondering if it is possible to have it renewed in the US. I was going go back to the Caribbean to get it renewed later this year but if I could do it while I'm in the US it would certainly be a lot cheaper.

Yuo cannot get a visa inside the US. Just remember, the consulate may cancel your F-1 visa when you apply for a B-2 visa.

I already have extend / change nonimmigrant my Visa from B1/B2 visa to F1 since four months ago, can i cancel the F1 Visa because I am no longer wanted to study in the school, I want to travel to France to live in paris and return to the USA for a visit a year later, with the knowledge that the B1/B2 valid until 2013, can I cancel the F1 Visa and the use of B1/B2 the original Visa to return to visit USA after one year later .

If you filed to change your status from a B2 to a F1 with CIS while in the United States, you did not change your visa. What you did was change the status of your admission to a F1 student. If your B2 visa is still in your passport and does not have canceled written on it, it is still valid until the expiration date on the visa. That means you just leave the United States turning in your current I-94. You then can just return the next year for your planned tourist trip as long as your original B2 visa is still valid.
