How long does it approximately take to receive a visa stamp after I485 is filed? This is a family based petition in NY, so the DO would be Garden City/NYC. The I485 has not yet been filed as my PD has not yet been reached, but looking to file by November of this year if pace for FB1 keeps up. If anyone can explain the overal I485 process... I'd be greatly appreciated... perhaps anything I should be prepared for... Thank you!

www.uscis.gov, processing dates link. Get familiar with that website, and you will get a lot of information on the I-485 process. Then and only then, please come back with specific questions pertaining to your specific situation, if it's at all complicated.

My case is exactly like that of cestlavie104: single, over 21, being sponsored by citizen parents.

My papers are in CA, and under I 485 "Employment-based adjustment applications" it says "6 months" Am I looking at the right area?

My question is that after the PD is crossed, it'll take an additional 6 months for me to get my I 485?

Thanks

ULTRON

cestlavie104/ULTRON, it'll probably take anywhere from 5 months to several years, there's no guarantee. You will be eligible for employment authorization within after 90 days of filing, and receive AP documentation usually within 90 days, so you'll get to start to enjoy the interim benefits of work and travel about three months into the process. But no way of predicting usually when you will have the GC in hand, there are too many variables such as name check etc.

Thanks austriacus. I want to confirm, what is "AP documentation"? Does it allow foreign travel?

No. "Employment-based" != "sponsored by parents". You need to look at your District Office's page.

You can apply for private loans. Your citizen parent can be a cosigner - assuming they have good credit history. My mom is a cosigner for my medical school loan. Yes, you need a GC to apply for federal loans.

You can check I485 case timelines on http://www.trackitt.com/usa-immigration-trackers/i485-tracker2/
This is family-based other than marriage since the filing is not concurrent with I130.

Does anyone know if it is possible to get student loans while I485 is pending? I read in one of the posts here that for federal loans you actually need a GC in hand. Did anyone have experience with that?
