My wife will be returning back to USA after 11 months out of country. She doesn't have any re-entry permit since it's the first time visit after she got her GC approved. What is she suppsed to say if the officer asks any reason for this at the port of entry? Thanks.

Was her GC approved while she was outside the US and waiting for her I-485 to be processed? How long ago was it approved? Did her Advance Parole expire?

Her GC got approved in second week of Feb last year. She left to India in end of April last year. She will be coming back next month end. We didn't apply for parole since that's first visit after she got GC.

Even though it's the first trip abroad since GC approval, a reentry permit is still necessary for trips of a year or more. And having a reentry permit is advisable for trips over 6 months, although not absolutely necessary. She'll probably be hassled a bit because of the 11 months without the permit, but they should still let her in if she returns before 12 months.

Thank you so much for the replies. At the port of the entry what could she tell if they ask for the long gap (11 months)? Any suggestions please.

How about the truth? What was the reason for such a long trip immediately after getting a greencard? Was she like so many others who realized that they actually had to wrap up affairs that they left hanging?

It was due to some family reasons. She could tell that to officer at the port of entry. But, I'd like to know some answers which would convince the officer. Truth will not work always.

It's a heck of a lot better than being caught in a lie. Do you know what will happen to her if the POE officer does that?

Why do so many immigrants try to look for the "right answer" rather than merely tell the truth?
