We (Me, my wife and daughter) got our green cards in July 07'

My daughter is 17 years old and studying 11th grade in US. She is planning to do her Bachelors in India.
For that she has to move to India in July of 09'.

How can she maintain her GC and apply for citizenship later?
Me and my wife are planning to stay back in US.

Any input is hightly appreciated.

I believe she can apply for a reentry permit. I am not sure if it's valid for only 2 yrs or can be renewed as needed. Pls search on the board for "reentry permit".

A re-entry permit (if approved) would preserve the green card, but the time spent studying in India would break continuous residence for naturalization purposes. She has to restart the citizenship clock once returning to the US (although the whole 5 years doesn't have to be redone ... 4 years and a day since resuming continuous residence is sufficient to be eligible for citizenship).

I presume her Bachelor's will take 3 years? A re-entry permit has a max of 2 years. I don't know if another one can be obtained immediately when the 2 years runs out.

Another plan is to do the Bachelor's in the US, get citizenship in the meanwhile, then do a Master's in India.

The short answer is that she can't - there is no way to definitively lock-in a person's continuous residence while they study overseas (unlike having an N-470 while working abroad for a US corp). The only thing she can do is travel regularly, but even this strategy is a rather weak one, and relies on being assigned a sympathetic IO during N-400 interview. The situation is also highly dependent on the overall length of time she will be abroad.

She can still get citizenhip after coming back. It's just that she'll have to wait 4 years and a day after returning, instead of becoming eligible in 2012.

.
She needs to be back in us before expiry of first one and apply for a new one whilst in US and better get reciept date if possible before leave the country again.
(Only thing is --she shalll have res. address here, file tax if applicable etc etc as per guide lines provided in CIS ).Seems there were some cases who got consecutively for atleast another year(also some got it for 2 years again),depends on CIS descretion.
While applying for ,an attorney can provide the substantiation,if you feel to be more safe and can if canafford (since she is studying and he will be explaining the reason)otherwise you can do your self.
By this process, she is not 'abandoning' the GC but she can not 'preserve' the period abscense from US for CTZship calculation (Ref.as mentined by 'Jackolantern' reply of 4 yr,1month.. ).

Thank you all for your inputs.

It is very costly to do bachelors here. It might cost around 80 to 100K.
Bachelors in India will take 4 yrs (Engineering) and 6 yrs (Medicine).

Once we become citizens, can she apply for citizenship directly? If so how many months/yrs it will take for this process. She will be around 22 yrs by the time she completes her bachelors in India.

Anybody knows if she can extend the 2 yr period permission to stay outside US and retain the GC?

What - 800-100K! What state do you live in? Check out State Universities rather than U of...xx.
She will not be under 18 when you and your wife become citizens, so there is no connection between your citizenship and hers. One can get only 2 re-entry permits ever. Each is valid for 2 years. The permit can be collected at the overseas US embassy. If you are planning a 6 year medical program overseas this might not work out.

My daughter got her bachelors here for approx 6K per year, we paid this for only 2 years, 3rd year was free tuition (since I worked in same University), and she completed in 3 years instead of 4, so total for us was only 12k.
She was in a state college her 1st year, which allowed us to avoid a mandatory dorm fees coming with many universities in the first year. Then she transferred to the state university (2nd and 3rd years), no dorm fees, we paid only tuition, she lived with us.

QUOTE]
Medical course may be expensive in most of the schools but engineering/accounting/management/nursing etc in many state univs is quite affordable.
I am spending some thing like 8K/annum for my daughter for undergard.check your state.
If medicine in other country is 6 years at a stretch then REP route will not work.

After doing medical school in India, she would still have to do some time in medical school here in order to be licensed as a doctor in the US.

Now that she has a green card, she can qualify for various grants, scholarships, and loans that weren't available before the green card. She can also work off campus. If she can get a good SAT score and graduate in the top 15% of her high school class, and goes to a state university, she will probably get enough grants+scholarships+jobs+loans that it will cost you less than $2K/year, if it costs you anything at all.

Anil,
If her plan is to settle in the US then studying in India may not be a great idea. She will have to come back and probably do her MS or Dr licensing exams to get a decent job. Also the dental exams program for foreign Drs is ending soon.
Another downside is she will be charged NRI rates for school and hostel fees in India.
In the long run a good local state school with student loans may be a better option. There is no way to maintain her residency for long term even if you both become citizens.

Want more input on Various type of College aids

Hi

I am parent of 15 yr old. As I have seen even in STATE UNIVERSITIES the tution and other FEES for college are around 10000 $ or over this time in many state.

So I assume College education for my son will become really costly for me.

But MANY OF you here indicated that it is not that costly as it seems at first look. I could not understand this. EXCEPT PEOPLE TAKE TOO MUCH STUDENT OR OTHER LOANS

So can expereienced GUYS explain about most probable contribuitons that we can get from FEDERAL GOVERMENT in terms of FINANCIAL AIDS for college. List cources of major sholar ships etc.

Does LOAN is good idea to take for our CHILD.

Any input on this major issue will help lot of US.

Please post links to most important sites also for aids and scholarships

Yes, that is the listed cost, but actual will typically be much less.

Suppose the cost is $12000.

Part time job + summer job: $5000/year.
Student loan: $3000/year.
Grant or partial scholarship: $2000/year.

That leaves you with $2000/year to pay, and your child graduates with $12000 debt which isn't too terrible.

Most universities have their own scholarship funds, and there are also grants available from various other organizations.

Google "paying for college".

The core courses can be completed at community colleges at 1/3rd or 1/4th of the tuition fee of University and the credits transferred to the University. This is another way of saving the college tuition.

My daughter was in the same situation and got her citizenship. But you need to satsify the conditions.

Your daughter is living here till July' 09. That means she completes the required 24 months of the 30 months physical presence in the last 5 years. She needs another 6 months in US. So in the next 3 years she has to come here for every 6 months not to break the continuous residence. And evry time she comes, if she stays a month here, then she gets the remaining 6 months required. She has to apply for the citizenship immediately when she is elligible, I think April' 2012!!

My daughter did exactly the same as above and got her citizenship 2 months back. She came back to US every 6 months, stayed for 3 to 4 weeks every time. Applied N400 on Dec' 27th, got the finger print notice in 3 weeks, completed finger prints earlier than the appointment date. She had to come back for interview in March and again for oath in July. We requested to give the oath date in July at the interview and the officer accepted.

If she is coming for every 6 months, as per rule there is no need for re-entry permit. But as a precaution she applied and also at the entry point the officer asked for the re-entry permit even though the trip was only for 5 to 5-1/2 months. May be because of long trip. The re-entry permit is for 2 years and can be applied for extension. But not sure of how many extensions.

Re-entry permit can not be extended. A green card holder can only obtain two re-entry permits.

When considering the cost of studying in India vs. studying in the US, also include the cost of traveling back and forth to India at least twice a year.
