NEED HELP!!!!

When I drove to Canada, the Canadian border officials were OK with only the GC, and I'm pretty sure that's the routine. I believe if you have a GC in hand you don't need a passport to enter Canada or Mexico. The US CBP will also be OK with only the GC at re-entry.

Travelling through airport borders is a completely different beast through. I'm pretty sure they ask for a passport when entering the other country and also when re-entering the US.

Plus the airlines are unlikely to let you on without it.... and you probably won't be allowed to leave where you are either :D
Incidentally, the BA guy at LHR checked my green card thoroughly. They are clearly trained as to where all the security features are!

At jfk I was specifically asked to show my passport. Also, the Mexicans will probably want to see your passport...

The Chinese and Indians at my work who need to renew their visas outside the USA fly to El Paso Texas, catch a taxi to Juarez Mexico, renew at the USA consulate, then walk back across the bridge to the USA.

Indians and Chinese need visas to enter Mexico but they don't bother getting one since the Mexicans at land borders just wave everyone through. The alternative is flying back to China / India. I'm always amazed at their bravery.

Being an Australian I took the safe Canada route.
