I am getting married to my fiance (together for 6 years) in December and will be applying for spousal sponsorship (I am USC, fiance Canadian). Our finances have been joint for a few years, but the only proof we have is one joint checking account. We are ready to purchase a new car, but everywhere seems to require social security numbers from both parties. My fiance obviously does not yet have a social security number and we want to make sure these documents are in both of our names. I keep reading that we need to establish our joint financial lives, but how do people do that in the U.S. when you need a SSN to open any accounts. Our bank allowed us to open a checking account in both our names 3 years ago. We have our savings in a different bank (higher interest rates), but they would not allow my fiance on without an SSN. So far, we can't figure out how to get both our names on: cell phone bill, car loan, utilities, cable, savings account, credit cards (fiance is an authorized user, but not a joint account holder), etc. Are people aware of companies that are open to only one person having an SSN, but having both people on the account. We have a a very real relationship and are afraid that we won't have the documentation to prove it without being able to get both of our names on these. We do have health and life insurance together as well as tons of pictures for the last 6 years, but we really want to be able to show that we share finances. All of our income is from me (my fiance is a homemaker), so I don't know if or how that affects anything. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
