Need advice on Amsterdam half-day tour, also is visa needed?

Hello Friends:

Well, we will have about 8 hours layover at Amsterdam airport in the end of December, reaching the airport around 6:00 AM, with our connecting flight leaving around 2:00 PM. On our last trip, I saw that tours are offered at the airport itself, but I didn't have enough time then to find out more about the tour. I googled about the amsterdam tours, but could not find any information about such tours, though lots of other information about city tours. Does anyone have any information about these tours, or experience about these tours? Should I even take this tour? Or any other information that I should know?

We received our GC in 2008, and have Indian citizenship. Do we need to get visa or something else to go for a half-day tour of Amsterdam or our GC will be good?

You need a visa.
 
Dang it..I was thinking that we will have some additional rights now.

Now, can we get that Schengen visa at the airport itself (just like some tourist visas) or need to personally go to the embassy to get the visa?

Rights? Even US citizens do not have the RIGHT to enter the Netherlands. The Netherlands is a sovereign nation. I am sure they are the least bit impressed that you (or anyone else for that matter) possesses permanent resident status in the US.
You will need to contact the nearest Dutch consulate to apply for a Schengen visa. There is one good bit of news however. If you decide to stay at the aiport and not leave, they waive the requirement for a transit visa. Bear in mind, that too is a privilege, not a right :)

Check with your airline and ask if there is any provision of a 24 hour visa or so available at the airport since you're staying for at least 8 hours. That's what I did at Dubai airport and the Emirates airline sponsored my 24 hours visa and I took a tour of the city. Of course every country/airline is different so you might not get entertained at Amsterdam, but no harm in asking.

You will need a visa, and AFAIK it is impossible to get it at the airport (not the Schengen one). And no, the GC holders do not have any special status for Schengen purposes.
