NCS/Columbus, OH timeline

My wife and I took the oath yesterday afternoon....They only asked for GC and oath letter questionnaire. The oath was held at the Ohio Historical Center...about 125 people were naturalized in a proper court session held by three judges of the US district court. We will apply for passport this week.

Thanks to all who contribute to this forum and help all of us. Please keep up the good work! Good luck in your journeys

haymyth: How long did the whole Oath ceremony take? I have my oath on this monday(19th) and it is at Veterans Memorial. Will it take more than 3 hours as I have an exam review in my class and I dont want to miss the class.

well, got done with the oath ceremony... it was at Veterans Memorial on Broad Street... 322 people got citizenship

We were supposed to reach by 8:30. Then they took away the questionnaire letter one gets in mail and the green card. Then there was a small recess till 10:30am. By 11am, the oath ceremony started. A couple of speeches by judges and Sec of State. Then oath and the naturalization certificate is given. I left by 12:30 pm.

Congrats Delhite...It seems that you received your oath letter and was called in for the oath quite quickly. A coworker of mine has interviewed at the end of may and he still has not received the letter. I hope my case will be similar to yours. I am holding off on vacation plans until this is through :p

only 13 days til my interview

I dont know how things work at USCIS. I went to oath with a friend, who had applied for citizenship with her mom & dad in july 2007. It was weird; her dad got naturalized a month before her and her mom like a week before our naturalization date. We both got naturalized on the same day, although I had applied for naturalization in jan 2008.

I hope you dont have to hold off vacation plans for too long, good luck jatas!

Jatas, can you please post your interview experience here.

Unfortunately, I did not get approved right away. They requested additional documentation from me. I had all my tax forms with me at the interview but they didn't ask for it during the interview but requested it afterwards. The person who interviewed me did not say hello or good bye at all and was extremely formal and strict. I don't know if it is true for all the officers but I was sort of taken aback with the behavior. I also felt like I was in trial.

I was able to provide the additional documentation and got approved recently. Now I am waiting for my oath letter. Can someone give me a more updated status on oath dates in Columbus? How many oath sessions are there in a month?

A friend of mine had the Oath Ceremony done on Aug 7th. I know the next one is scheduled for Sep 18th at Vets memorial.

GK8088 and Sampatns please can you post your interview experience and if IO ask for any documents during your interview.

I did carry all of my previous immigration papers(Just in case). The IOs are very friendly in Columbus. I timed my interview and it took less then few minutes (7-8 min). The IO reviewd the application with me, and asked six simple civic questions. After that he asked me to read one of the civic question and asked me to write "Today is sunny day". At the end he congratulate me. When asked about the auth, he said I will receive a letter in mail in 30-45 days.

Hint: If you have filed all your taxes properly in last 5-6 years, no need to carry any additional docs. Also, dress well (suit). Not many folks were suit for this type of interview, however I highly recommend it as it shows a good respect for IOs, and they certainly appreciate that.

The interview was quite simple. IO was very friendly.
We went to office 30 min early. Security took our appointment letters, checked bags and let us inside. My appointment was at 11, but was called in around 11:30. There were very few people in that waiting room, atleast couple of them trying to memorize the civics Qs.
IO basically went through the application. I asked for name change ( infact last name spelling correction ), and two speeding tickets. IO asked for just Green Card - no other documents. I took Federal returns, marriage certificate, birth certificate/affidavit. He stopped few minutes at travel dates to calculate number of days I am out of US, which are really less than 90, from 3 trips. Finally asked to write my corrected name on photo, asked me to sign. I do not remember how I signed - but one form I signed with full name and one the usual ( cheque ) sign. Asked me to read a sentence " I drive a blue car to work" and asked me to write simple sentence ( forgot what it is ).
The six civics & history Qs asked were
1. How many stars are there in our flag ?
2. Who is the President of the United States today ?
3. Who becomes president if both President and VP die ?
4. Who was Martin Luther King Jr ?
5. Who was the main writer of Declaration of Independence ?
6. Name the benefit of being a citizen of the United States
Then said, congrats I am recommending for approval. He also said, he knows next interviewee is my wife and all she need to show is GC and know SSN.
To my wife he asked same civics and history Qs and said both of our Oath will be scheduled on same day. We asked for name change for her also, and she has one traffic tkt ( an accident but sighted for disobeying traffic control device - with 2 points ).
We still have name change to be done for my 2 kids, followed by rest of places, OCI. Some times I think if all this is worth approx $3k we spend on it.

Oath completed, Name change Question

We ( me and my wife ) took oath on Sep 4th and became citizens now. We checked our certificates, everything is good on them. Only problem I am seeing is, on enclosed Name Change petition - Court did not write the "Name of Court" on top of page.
On the same page towards bottom, under "Certificate of Name Change", Deputy Clerk has signed and name of Clerk ( not signature ) is stamped. An embossed US Court seal is under that.
The problem is, when I take a copy of this paper - there is no way anyone can see where and who issued this certificate. Did any one have this problem ? If I have to get the court name on top of certificate, can I just write it there or do I have to go back to court ?

Another I noticed during oath
- there are people from 23 countries, every was happy becoming citizen of US
- I can see happiness in their face, taking pictures and video with judge and clerk after oath
- Only people from India did not do that !!!! why ?
