Naturalization test - verbal or written?

There are several parts to the Naturalization test. One is answering several civics questions orally, another is writing a short sentence, and reading a short sentence out loud. Your speaking ability is also tested in actual conversation during the interview. The test rules are the the same at every DO.

Yes, just the way you show you understand the conversation and can answer questions is part of your English evaluation. A written history test would qualify also as a proof you know how to write in English. One way or another the interview includes an element of English knowledge testing.
