My wife and I applied passport at local post office on May 30th and I received my passport on June 15th. I applied under regular processing.

Received a call from United States Department of State yesterday night around 8 PM. My wife didn't pick it up. When I returned home I called back that number and it said the number is not in service. Within a minute received call from the same number. The person on the line informed me that he needs to speak to my wife. He mentioned that there is a problem on the name, they don't have enough space to put my wife's name on the passport. We filled the form online and it allowed us to enter the name. The limit is 29 characters but my wife's first name is 30 characters (4 words) and last name is 12 characters. We used only first 2 words (12 characters) as first name and one middle initial in the drivers license and he wanted our permission to use the same way in the passport also. I thought it is pretty good service.

Does any one have any opinion about having different names in passport and N400 certificate? I am going to leave the certificate at home and carry the passport & card for all travel and identification purpose. Does it create any issues?

Humble request: Please don't ask questions like why the name is so long and why didn't you change it during the oath.

My understnding is it should be OK. Lot of people change the names even after getting the passport. your idea on DL seems to be good.

In the US, 4 words for a first name would normally be considered to be 1 first name plus 3 middle names, unless the first two words are hyphenated (e.g. Carrie-Ann) in which case that would be a two-word first name plus 2 middle names. Using the first 2 words plus a middle initial or the first 1 word plus a middle initial should be fine. US passports allow shortening of names like that.

Thank you Jackolantern.

We used first 2 words with space in between as first name then one middle initial and one word last name in DL and SSN card . I will report how it is presented in the passport once I receive it.

Thats the risk we face if the real names are used as user id... some people are too intelligent (like Prithis :D:D:D ) and can guess the full names from the user ids.

prithis, can u guess my name from my user id? :D:D

Yes, Harvey :D

Talking about long names, here's a true story: a friend of mine named Paliniappachchan had called the DMV regarding something. The conversation went something along these lines:

DMV: Can you please spell your name for me?
Friend: It is Paliniappachchan. P as in Pineapple, A as in apple, L as in Larry, I as in India, N as in Nancy, I as in India, A as in Apple, P as in Pineapple, P as in Pineapple, A as in Apple....
DMV:...cutting him off in frustration...: Sir, can you just tell me how many apples and how many pineapples?

you meant to say I am "Battle worthy or carnage worthy" ;)

I have 11 (first name) + 11 (last name). Out of those 22 nine of them are A.:D

omg, you made me laugh out loud!

(incidentally, my first name has 9 letters, only one is A, and my maiden surname has 2 letters! now that i've taken my husband's, i now have a 6-letter last name)
