Guys,

Quick question is it better to change your name once you receive your green card or while your I-485 is pending.

Also how long does name change take if you have your green card.

Thanks

Ed

Hi Eddie,

They say that name change complicate things. I also wanted to change my name, but people advised me to wait until I am a citizen. If you can wait, I think it's better to wait, but if you can't, I think after getting your GC is better. That way, your GC application is not jeopardized in anyway. Just my opinion!

I think you are right. I will change it once I get my GC (hopefully this year). Any idea how long does the name change once you get your GC.

My experience with name change.

I had to change my name once because the Judge clerk (I was granted asylum by Immigration Judge) misspelled my last name and put an extra “R”.

I had 2 RTDs with the wrong last name and 1 Employment Authorization Card, plus many plane tickets. BEFORE I filed I-485 I sent a letter to the clerk here downtown L.A. and she was very nice, she retrieved all my files from the Laguna Niguel, CA INS offices, edited an “amended order” had the judge sign it and sent it to me.

I attached a copy of both orders to my I-485, as well as my new I-131s, and now my life is back to normal. Hadn’t I done it at the time I filed for residence, I would have to wait ‘till citizenship to avoid complications. I think it depends on the circumstances of your name change (maybe you just got married, no big deal) - but my case was a misspelling and I was basically living a double life having to be careful where and how I wrote my name.

I hope this helps.

I would like share my experience with you regarding name change.I went to court and ask them whether it's possible to change.I was told by them US Law dos not comply to your country of natinality because of that you can NOT change your name till you become US citizenship in USA.

By the time I went to court my I-485 was pending.

Regards.

N-400 form says that if you would like to change your name your oath of elegance will be held in Court, and you'll get your Naturalization Certificate with your new name. That's the easiest way i think. But you can change anytime while you in legal status just fill up some forms with your Court and publish legal notice in local newspaper.
