name change question

I've got a court order of name change for my minor child, but the name on his passport and green card has not been done. My question is as by the time when we apply for citizenship he'll be 14, so he'll be on application instead of having his own. How are we going about changing his name then - will USCIS accept a name change for a dependent? If not, can he get the changed name on his first passport? - Any input is appreciated!

--------------- you can get his name changed on passport, contact nearest Consulate of your country in US and then file form I-90 for name correction on Green Card and that way child will have his new passport with correct name and will get new Green Card with correct name

ginnu,
Thanks for the reply. I am aware of that, but if I don't do the name change on his current passport and gc, will I be able to get his name changed on my citizenship application (with him as a dependent)? If not, could he get his first US passport with the right (new) name?

Does anybody know the answer for PhillyJulyLC's question? I'm interested too.

----------------- NOT on your Citizenship application because USCIS computer system will show his name as on Green Card

-------------- he should get new passport with correct name then file I-90 and will get corret name on GC , he CAN change his name at the time of Citizenship but why do you want to wait??? many are getting Cards with wrong name or mistakes or changing names, just fileI-90 with LA lock box address or Efile

Having a court order of name change from US, it may be a hassle or impossible to get a new passport with new name from the original country. On the other hand, if I file I-90 for a green card with the new name, is it possible and is it OK to have passport with different (old) name?

If I wait until the time of citizenship, another issue comes up - actually going back to PhillyJulyLC's orginally question. The kid does not need to file the application because he would be the dependant of the parent who is applying. So he does not automatically have a place to put the new name as his parent does. So he needs to change name AFTER citizenship instead of AT the time of citizenship. Maybe I mess up the quesiton too much. Can you at least clarify the issue in the first paragraph? Thanks!

As far as I'm concerned, one way to prove a minor child's naturalization status is either file a N-600 for a certicate of citizenship, on which I believe you CAN change his name based a court order even if it is different from the name on his GC. Another way is to get him a US passport. My original question was - if I don't file N-600 instead only get him the passport. Will it be a problem if we ask to put his new name on the first US passport - 'cause in that case we have a court order but no immigration document has that name on it. Hope this clarifies things. Thanks.

So your original question is much simpler. Although noboday answers your question yet, you already clarified some of my confusion :)

According to my understanding of your explanation, if I want to get my kid a passport with new name, all I need to do is file N-600 first and then get the passport later. Am I right?

I'm still years away from citizenship - just considering whether it is worthwhile to get a legal name change for the kid. Thanks for your response.

Initially I planned to get a court order of name change for my kid, and leave the passport and greencard as they are. I want to know: if I want his passport and greencard having the new name, should I get new green card first or a new the passport first? Can I change only one of them (green card)? Will it be a problem at the time of citizenship or is it workable at all?

If I get a court order of name change between I-485 approval and the passport stamp appointment, is it possble to get the first green card with the new name - different from the one on I-485?

It seems OK to file I-90 to change name right after I receive the green card - is that just a waste?

And the other concern is the possible long delay of the new card. My understanding is: 1) name changing on foreign passport and GC are seperate processes - as long as you have a court order, sequence doesn't matter (better keep them consistent though); 2) without getting a court order first you may not be able to change name on N-600 (It asked for current LEGAL name, and then the name on GC - only two blanks for name.)
