N-400 Processing Flow

Folks,

I just received my NOA today and it says that my case has been transfered to the National Benefits Center to assist with processing. I looked online to check the Benefits Center processing time but there was no category for N-400.

So I'm trying to understand now which center handle which part:

1- Does anyone here have a flow chart or can explain the process flow?
2- Where does name check and background check fit in that process?
3- Why N-400 was not listed under the Benefits Center processing time?

Thanks in advance guys.

What service center did you use? It happened to me when I applied to take off my temporary condition and it did work in my favor. Don't worry about it as that could be a blessing in disguise. God's grace

Applicant sends N-400 package to service center for pre-screening. The service center then forwards case file to NBC (National Benefits Center) for initial processing and scheduling of FP and initialization of name check. The NBC then forwards the case file to the DO(district office) when an interview date becomes available. After the interview, the DO informs applicant of interview results. The applicant is notified of adjudication decision either immediatly after oath or by mail. If approved, applicant is scheduled for oath date to become USC.
2- Where does name check and background check fit in that process?
The NBC initiates the name check once itreceives application from service center.
3- Why N-400 was not listed under the Benefits Center processing time?

Naturalization processing times are listed by DO since that is where the interview and oath is scheduled.

Bob - thanks for the reply. So is it safe to assume that the NBC won't forward the file to the DO UNTIL FBI clears the name check?

Correct, since USCIS has a directive that interviews should only be scheduled once name check has cleared.

I just received my notice and it also says that it has been transferred to NBC.

Bob ,

I have seen some cases in this forum in which intervew was set up without the FBI back ground check being completed. In some cases I have even read that they asked the applicant to fill up a new n-400 at the time of interview because they have not received the application from "some where" (my guess NBC).

Now all these cases seems to be an exception rather than a norm but they do happen USCIS directive notwithstanding. It might have been because of a push to clear cases before election,.. but who knows.

I am not a lawyer please treat my comments appropriately.

Yes, I have seen those examples as well but never figured out why interview was scheduled before name check was cleared.

My suggestion (which I followed) to every person going to n-400 interview would be to take a copy of the N-400 form that they submitted originally to the interview.

It may be a less likely scenario but better be over prepared than under prepared.
