N-400: 14 months since interview canceled, USCIS silent

My wife's N-400 has been stagnant for over 14 months and we're not sure what to do. The situation is a little complicated by the fact that I have been living overseas for the past two years due to work while she waits in the US for naturalization. Her interview was scheduled for February of last year but was canceled "due to unforeseen circumstances" eleven days prior to the interview. We waited until May and still didn't hear back from USCIS, so we pressured them for an update on our case, and they said that we should hear from them in 120 days. 120 days pass and we hear nothing from them. Somewhere around October of last year I sent a letter to both the local office and the main office inquiring about our case and if me being overseas has anything to do with the hangup. They never bothered to respond. In December we reached out to a State senator who contacted the USCIS on our behalf, and their response was that she is "in-line for the interview" and should be notified of her interview schedule within 60 days. That was on December 21st. It is now March 14th, 85 days later, and we still haven't heard anything from them.

During that period my wife has also gone to the office and done the INFOPASS inquiries and has gotten nothing but "the case is still pending" and one instance where the supervisor of the local office refused to even respond. We're tired of the USCIS jerking our chain and don't know what to do.

Is there something that you ll think may delay the case?
where your wife is from?
for example....
is this her first wedding?

She's from South Korea. Lived in the US for about six years before we got married. For both of us this is our first marriage. The only thing I can think of that may be getting in the way is the fact that I have lived abroad for two years.

I don't understand why the USCIS is so uncooperative in telling us what is going on.

Probably the case is under investigation....be patient, it will happen
remember as long as you dont get a NO, it means it is still good.

A little update: Toward the end of March I contacted a Senator who contacted the USCIS for me, and the response was that our application is in the background check phase.

I don't understand how it can take 10 minutes to get a background check at a gun store but more than a freaking year to get a background check through a government agency.

Gun store b\g check is one agency.. fbi. Immigration related b\g checks are multi-agency, hence it can take a freaking while.

Does she have a fairly common Korean first and/or last name?
