Hello folks,

I am new for this great forum. I would like to get friendly advise from all. I a. US citizen and my parents are green card holder now. They came in USA for only one time for few months. Now they don't like to stay in USA because of different environment and being dependent. They wan to live with my brother. My brother doesn't have any status to come toUSA yet. I applied last year for GC for my brother but it's taking still so long. But I don't want my parents to loose their GC either. What is the best way to stay in USA as less as possible and come less frequently just to keep GC active and also money is an issue for middle class parents. When they come to USA an they get 2years extension? If yes then what is the process? How many months they have to stay in USA for 2years extension? They need to buy round trip ticket after knowing the possible dates? Please please help me.. I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

A reentry permit would allow them to stay outside the US for 2 years, but after that, then what? Will they settle in the US at the end of those 2 years?

The green card is not meant to be used as a tourist visa. And holding on to the green card while living abroad would require them to file US tax returns for their non-US income; do they want that?

If they really don't expect to settle down in the US, they should officially surrender the green cards with form I-407 at a US consulate and apply for tourist visas*. It's easy to get a tourist visa after surrendering the green card, and they can apply for the visa and surrender the green card in the same visit to the consulate.

*unless they have a passport of country that enables them to visit the US without a visa

Thanks.
Can I ask you few questions please:

1. Can my parents come before 12 months or they have to come before 11 months? In November there will be 12 months. It's too close book ticket!
2. After coming here how many months to stay here before applying for 2 years extension? I heard they have to live 3 months before they apply for extension. Is it true? How much it cost? Based on that can I book round trip for them or just one way and then book return ticket?
3. Do I need a local immigration lawyer to help me on this process ?

Thanks.

It does not appear that you actually read the very sane reply that was offered and prefer to follow one particular path so why did you bother to ask in the first place?

Either accept the answers you were provided or choose your own path and be ready to accept the consequences. Don't try to game the system. The Green Card has a very specific purpose.

Thanks. I heard GC holder needs to stay in USA for continuos 30 months to get citizenship. Is it true?

Funny, I thought green card holders were meant to be permanent residents (sarcasm).

Sorry, questions like this annoy me so much when so many people wish to gain a green card and enter the USA and stay there to begin different lives.

Permanent residence does not mean tourist visa.

Yes, the physical presence requirement is to stay a total of 30 months in the US, of the past 5 years before filing the application.

In addition, there is the continuous residence requirement, which says they should not have any absences outside the US that are 6 months or longer.
