Moving to Puerto Rico

Hello everybody,

I have a question, a family member of mine is a derivative asylee, his I-485 ND is Dec 2005 and is pending in TSC. He is thinking in moving to San Juan, Puerto Rico, so he can work as a medical surgeon there.
He is a toraxic surgeon with more than 20 years of experience back in his native country and in order to pass the board test in California he needs to speak english very fluent and he is having a very difficult time learning a new language at his age.

So he is thinking to take the medical board test in Puerto Rico, and live and practice there.

My question is:
In the view of CIS...living in Puerto Rico is the the same as living in the United States? I mean... moving to San Juan would affect his green card process? Is moving to Puerto Rico abandon his asylum?

I know that Puerto Rico is part of the U.S., and when you go there you don't go trough immigrations... (Is this true?) ...but I am not sure about living there and consequenses with CIS.

Does anybody know? Is there any asylees living in Puerto Rico?...

Thanks,

Hello, I have somewhat a similar question, but mine is in regard to vacation in Puerto Rico.
As an aslyee, does anybody know if we need a RTD to travel to Puerto Rico or can we just use our driving license (as id) like when we travel to other states in the USA? How about for somebody who has a nonimmigrant visa in the US, do they need a visa or will the Visa they already have be enough?

Thanks

I traveled to Puerto Rico in 1995, when I was a student on F1 visa. I didn't need a visa to travel there. If I remember correctly, you'll need to bring documentation to show that you have a legitimate status in US mainland. I was not checked when landing and leaving PR.
