Hi guys, I was wondering if any of you could shed some light. I am born and raised in Canada, but my mom is an american citizen. She came up to Canada in the early 70's and returned to the US for vacations. Now is it going to be easy for me to get dual, or hard, as she has never stayed more than a month, and has not worked in the US, and never registered me, before I turned 18. Any input would be great thank you. I think I do fall in the category of Your citizen parent lived at least 5 years in the United States before you were born; and
At least 2 of these 5 years in the United States were after your citizen parent's 14th birthday. My mom was born in 1950 - and moved to canada in 1970, after marrying my father. She was 19, and in two months would have been 20. I am confused a little bit!!! Do I need to fill out the n-400 application, (Naturalization) or am I an automatic citizen due to my mother???? Please help, I do not know where to begin.

If you have a canadian birth certificate and proof that your mom was a US citizen at the time of your birth, you can request the US embassy/consulate in canads to issue a Consular report of birth. You are automatically a US citizen because your mom is. Once you get that letter from US embassy you can use it to apply for a US passport, no need to file N-400, etc.

My friends say i do not qualify, due to the fact that she gave birth to me when she was 24, and the time frame does not match. But I think due to the fact she was in the United states for 19 years b4 i was born I do qualify. I guess the only one way to find out is to go the usa embassy in Vancouver. Does it matter what age you are???

If all answers to these questions are YES, then, you were born USC..

1. Were you born on or after 12/24/1952 and prior to 11/14/1986?

2. Do you have at least one US citizen parent?

3. Prior to the day you were born, was your US citizen parent physically present in the US for 10 years, at least 5 years were spent after age 14?

If you can answer YES to all 3 questions, you are a US citizen since birth!

You need to show proof and documentations that you qualify in order to get a US passport!
