Moing to a new state - 1 day after Initial Interview

Hello all!

Today - my wife and I received our Initial Interview letter, scheduled for Nov 4, 2005 (Seattle).

This came as somwhat of a shock to us both, as we had figured it would not happen this soon.

I'm Active Duty Military (Air Force) and I'm being transferred to another state (california) from Seattle, WA. We absolutely have to move a day or so after the Initial Interview. We cannot stay in WA any longer.

We had planned to leave on 29 October for our new home in California, but then we decided it would be best to stay here for an extra week and go to the interview. I wish I could stay longer than the 1 week, but I simply cannot.

After the initial interview, and if things go according to plan (and everything goes right) - we would be getting the Green card in the mail approximately 1 week later (correct?) - What if I'm not around, will this mail be forwarded to my new address?

If it won't be forwarded, can I request a new card be sent out - to my new address, after filing the address change document?

Does anyone have any advise for us?

Suggestions?

Thanks for any and all help!

One other option that I just thought of is this:

1. I can go ahead and get a Post Office box at my new location in California, right now, as in today.

2. Do a change of address (AR11) and call the necessary numbers to update my address.

This basically gives me a month for the addres change to work in the system.

Does this seem like a better plan?

Will the change of address action now, effect my appointment on November 4th in Seattle, WA? If so, how will I know this ahead of time?

Many thanks once again!

Mike

I think that you can work with the Postal Office so they can forward you your mail from your old address to your new one. Or get a Box so you can always get your mail wherever you are (many people use that way since there are a service when you don't have just one address or are keeping traveling). In any case, you should submit the AR11.
Well Seattle is pretty updated on 2005. So if almost a month ago was in April 30th cases now it should be around beginning of July, so you are on time. GREAT!
Good luck!

cherr1980, thanks for your response - Th eonly thing is that the post office will not forward the mail from USCIS (from what I have been reading) so this might not work out for me.

I would love to hear some more feedback/suggestons:

What should I do? What would you do? :)

A. Change my address now (to a P.O. Box at my new location in CA) before physically moving?

or

B. Wait until after the Initial Interview (scheduled for Nov 4th), move as planned on November 5th... and then hope and pray it's not a huge hassle in getting a replacement card at my new address (should everyhting be approved during our initial interview).

Right now, I'm leaning more towards "B" because I'm thinking that changing the address now might result in our appointment being pushed way back, and also because I'm technically not moving until after the interview anyway.

For what its worth, I think Plan B is the way to go as well. Tell the adjudication officer that you have been restationed to California; after all you are a member of the armed services serving your country; if that doesnt generate good will towards you then nothing else will. But instead of applying for a replacement card, why not notify the adjudication officer that you have been restationed and request the card be sent to your new address? Why not file the change of address form with the officer at the interview?

Just a thought.

You know that is the same deal I am having right now...my husband is in the Army and if he changes of unit (that probably will happen) we probably will be moving from where we at, actually we put on sale our house already so we are moving anyway...and always to change address is a mess with an agency as USCIS.
Yes you alright I made some search and is true they won't forward that kind of mail. Oh My! that is a problem.
I will stay as long as I can where you at. The problem is that anyway you MUST move on the 5th, now your wife must go with you that week? I mean if she could stay in the house for a week that normally takes to arrive the card in the mail. You just have less than a month so they can change address but you never know with USCIS, actually your file should be already in your DO so is directly to them that you need to contact. Is there somebody over your house or soon to be ex house to check the mail?

If you change address now they probably will going to transfer your file to the DO in your area in CA IF they get the change of address on time, if not then you will have it in Seattle, probably in the interview they can make arrangements of it, I don't know. If you have orders to move, make copies of your orders and all that so explain to them that is not because you woke up a week ago thinking to move. I would make an InfoPass in your DO and then make an assestment.
Your JAG office didn't make any comment about it?
Let me know...

Now you will like to change in your DO you can change directly to them your change of address if you decide to do so:
http://uscis.gov/graphics/fieldoffices/seattle/aboutus.htm
So you must send the AR11 to DHS, call the Customer Center and send a change of address to your DO.
The only thing here is that they probably will send your file to CA and then your interview date will change. But CA is very up to date too. So probably you won't need to wait too long.
If you follow your option B, then as I said if your wife can wait there to check out for new mail arrivals in your old address that will be a great help just to assure that you guys will get the mail of the life.
If you ask me, I probably will wait. But if you submit the change of address later you must do that at least in 10 days not in 5.
Good luck!
