Missed "other names used" question on N-400

My name on GC is like John Doe and my legal name John Doe. But on my passport I have name John Smith Doe (with Smith as middle name).

But while filling N-400 application, I forgot to mention this "John Smith Doe" in Section C "If you have ever used other names, provide them below:" :(

Will this be a problem? Should I correct this? How?

Can I wait till interview to correct this? Or should I somehow correct it now?

Note: My legal name is John Doe.

Please advise.

Thanks,
Newbie001.

I would send a correction sheet to service center. Although you could wait until interview to make the correction, which would result another name check request and delay your approval. Just my 2 cents.

I called USCIS. The person said, I can do the corrections during my FP process. I don't know how far this will work out. Does anybody have any experience doing this? Is name check process initiated before or after FP process? Does anybody know?

I hope this innocent mistake doesn't cost me much. The last thing I want is to get into name check delay.

What's your opinion on changing this during FP Vs interview?

Thanks,
Newbie001.

It's best to have name addition/changes done at FP vs interview, since to get interviewed in the first place you must have passed your name check, so you risk being sent back to name check if you wait to provide the name changes only until interview.

I just called USCIS again to verify if I can change this information during FP appointment. After initial discussion, I was transferred to a higher official regarding this. She asked all my information, pulled up my file (on the computer it seems) and said, I should not worry about the middle name.

She said, "When the name check is done, they do it with First and Last name. And in USA, we don't care much about middle initial or name."

She also said, "If you want you can correct this during your FP process. But I am not sure if it will be corrected on your application then. You can correct it during interview. Again, it is not going to be make any difference or delay the name check or your overall process".

And she told me that FP notice have been sent to me already and I should receive it as soon as early next week.

Please let me know your opinons/feedback/comment.

Thanks,

Another USCIS buffoon speaks garbage again. The FBI's own published procedures (I can't find the link now) say that they do use the middle name, ordering it in all permutations with the first and last names.

So for John Smith Doe they will search for:
John Doe Smith
Smith Doe John
Doe John Smith
etc.

in addition to 2-name combinations
John Smith
Doe Smith
John Doe
etc.

Can I correct this during my FP?
or Can I try sending a letter? How do I that?
please advise on how to correct this so that I can avoid this confusion and possibly any future delay.

Thanks,

During your FP they will ask you to confirm your name so you should be able to confirm at that point your middle name with them.

I agree with Bobsmyth. When i did my FP, they scan barcode on my FP notice, the name(s) appears on the screen. They asked me whether my name is correctly spelled. Since my driver license and my GC has first name and last name interchanged. The gentlemen added my driver license name into other names column and saved it. I am pretty sure, you can make necessary changes during your FP appointment.

Thank you for the response.
I can sleep well tonight. I was told FP notice have been sent to me already.
I can't wait to correct this ASAP.

I have pretty much the same situation.
My birth certificate shows my first, middle(full) and last name. But I got my GC only with the initial of a middle name.
All my documents (GC and ssc) plus credit history go only the first letter of a middle name (driver license without a middle name at all). When I filled my form N-400 I left it this way(1st name, initial of a middle name and last one). But now as more I think about it as more I want to keep my middle name . Tomorrow I'll go for my fingerprint's app.I want to ask a person who does this procedure to type it in full.
I have a question about it now-if he /she type it into their system does it mean my full middle name will appear on the interview? And is it going to be the reason for another name check till interview?
If it will not appear on the screan during the interview and I'll mention that I want to have my full middle name instead of the initial letter will it cause an additional name check and delay the process?
Thank you ,folks so much for your help.

anmn,
I would really appreciate if you can post your experience on this during your FP process.

Thanks,

I'm back from my fingerprint app.
I typed my middle name this way on the list they give us to fill up
like: Smith (last name) Dean(first) R.(Robert) middle name.

When I spoke to the person who does this procedure I asked him to type my middle name in full and he said at first he has to leave it the way it is on the GC (in my case it's only the Initial)
then he went on another page of the screan and typed my full name(all of them) as a previously used ones .He couldn't give me an answer about whether my full spelled middle name is going to be saved and appear on USCIS screan during the interview or not.
Folks,do you think as long as he has typed and saved my middle name in full as a previously used name do I have to mention it on the inteview or the IO will see on his display?
Thanks

anmn,

Did they show your application on the screen? Did you ask them to fill it under Part 1, Section C. "If you have ever used other names, provide them below"? That's what I am planning to do.

I think as long as you mentioned it to the person, you did your part. What more can you do? You should be ok. And I should be ok too. :)

Thanks,

Yes.
when he scaned the barcode of the FP notice he asked me to check if the name is correct. And at that point I told him I want him to type my full middle name ,may be I wrong but it looks for me what on your GC is i that's your legal name.Do you think I'm right about it? And he left it the way it's on GC.
Then he went on another page of the screen with "If you have ever used other names, provide them below" and typed what I asked him, then again he asked me to check if everything is correct.

I hope it will work. I really cannot imagine what else can be done for now.
Good luck.

GC does not have the full legal name. They truncate long names to fit on the card, and they only use the middle initial. However, if you supplied your full middle name when applying for the GC, it should be in their systems even though it's not shown on the card. My I-485 receipt has my full middle name.
