Maternity Leave Duration

I am presently on H1 at client location thru a small indian company and visa is valid until Sept 2011 and like take a maternity leave for 7 months. Like to know maximum num of days leave I can take.

That is between you and your employer. The U.S. Employer is bound by federal law and regulations.

As for how you can count that time for H1-B purposes is something you need to consult an immigration legal professional about.
 
Typically it is 6 weeks for normal delivery and 8 for C-section. FMLA may add another 12 weeks unpaid. I know of no employer who would give a short term employee 7 months of time off; a key long time employee may be able to negotiate a part time schedule. COS to H4 if you are qualified for it. It has the added benefit of not counting toward 6 year limit.

In the US, pregnancy is not a disabling condition and most women are prepared to return to work after a short leave. Breast feeding is not an excuse as many women do both.

And do not expect your client to wait for you to return; your employer will likely need to replace you on the project - especially for a long break.
