Marry my girlfriend so she can stay...

Hi everyobody- I am an american citizen and have been dating my girlfriend (immigrant) for about a year now.... we have lived together for 6 months (I know, things move fast!).

It looks like she is about to get denied political asylum :( in which case she will have to go home.

I am in love with her, but not ready for marriage... however if it means losing someone I love I would consider marrying her if she could stay in my life. Would this allow her to stay here?

What are some things I should know? Any tips? Advice?

Thanks for any support...

EDIT: She entered the U.S. legally on a student work visa

I'm in a similar situation and am struggling with the following questions:
1. What if it doesn't work out eventually and I want to break up? It'll be harder for me to break up with someone I'm married to.
2. What if she leaves me disappears back to her own country on her own? I would need to track her down to divorce her before I can move on.
3. What if we separate and she takes half my assets?
4. How am I going to explain this if I have a future relationship?

I think of these because I'm not ready for marriage / commitment myself. That said, I trust her completely, but sometimes things don't work out. Anyone have any ideas on how to get past these issues?

A1: Weigh the pros and cons before taking the plunge.
A2: Possibly. Divorce in absentia is possible but is more complicated and takes much more time.
A3: Get a bulletproof prenup before the marriage takes place. Mind you, prenups do not do anything for the I-864 you will need to sign.
A4: Stick to the truth. Best way to go.
