Mailed the N-400 application, how long before I hear

Mailed my application last week and am wondering what the next step is. Would I receive an email from USCIS with the case #?

Also, I made a small mistake in the form (forgot to mention association with a non-charity organization). Should I send an amendment or just wait till the interview? Thanks!

You will not receive an email, but an I-797C (Notice of Action) via regular mail. It will have an application number on it and you can register that number to your online case status portfolio and then you will get emails anything your case status is changed.

You can wait till the interview to add the non-charity organization.

You should expect receipt notice by mail within 30 days.No need to disclose non charitable organization unless it was Al-Qaeda or some communist association.

Received the receipts (I-797C) except that they don't have a receipt #. Is this normal? If there is no receipt #, how do I track my case? Also, I received 2 copies in the mail for each of us (wife and I). No idea why..

On the receipt top left corner, under case type you will see Application Number. That's yor case number for N-400. Add that to your online portfolio and you have two options there. Receive email alert or text message to cell phone or both. If you like cell phone alert, you need to update your personal information with your cell phone number and choose "Y" for cell alert. Also, things move fast until you finish FP. After that, depending on your luck, you will quickly move to interview stage or get stuck like some of us for few extra weeks/months, waiting for interview letter.

Okay, found it (missed the "*" character initially). Thanks. So, it is finger printing and then, interview at some point and then, taking the oath. Are those the next 3 steps that would require physical appearances?

you are right abouttime - and I am waiting for FP Notices which are kind of overdue. I have seen others are receiving FP Notices within week to 10 days of NOA - good luck to you

interview via NetMeeting would be nice...

2nd interviews or even 2nd fingerprint appointments are not unheard of. Uncommon though.

Got a status update for both our applications (wife and I) and it looks like they sent out an RFE :-( Wonder why. Any thoughts on what they typically require? I filled the N-400 form, sent the photos and copies of the green card and the checks. Did I miss anything?

It's for FP.

FP is evidence required to process your case, so they are requesting that you take FP. A little confusing, but that is how USCIS classifies FPs.

oh okay, that is encouraging. thanks. funny that the lady I spoke to at USCIS didn't seem to know that either. she just asked me to wait a whole month and call them back if I still didn't receive it. thanks again for clarifying.

I got REF too. They mailed it out Oct 23, so I haven't got it yet. Hopefully it's FP not something else.

I applied on 1st October. USCIS got my application on 5th and sent a receipt immediately. My checks were cashed on 9th and I got receipt notice for me and my wife on 12th October. Then on 19th My wife's case showed RFE online and she got her fingerprint notice on 23rd October. However, my case status has not been updated yet. It is October 28 today and I don't understand why my case should take more time than my wife? Anybody in the same boat or any idea why this could be happening?

Is it possible for my status to not change but still get a finger printing notice? Has that happened to anybody? Or is the system very accurate these days?

My wife got here FP notice today but I haven't yet.. Same date everything was mailed, same priority dates, etc.
