Lost old paperwork - can we get copies?

My husband's mother-in-law who petitioned for his GC over 15 years ago threw away all the paperwork thinking they'd never need them. The only thing we have is one of his EAD, GC and the welcome letter without Priority date. I searched online for the data but it was not available.

Are there any way to obtain copies of old docs like I-130, I-485 etc from INS?
 
why would you need it?

the only thing my husband has from his immigration history is his naturalization certificate.
 
Several issues:

We wanted to make sure that he was never out of status... I am also uncertain about the selective service requirement. And someone on this forum listed the old INS documents as part of support documents for N400 interview. What if they asked for the copies.

He moved here and started working using his EAD after his 26 th birthday (lucky) but when he was 19 and 21, he visited US and stayed for several months. He was on 5 year tourist visa but his GC was pending at that time. Would that make him 'eligible' to sign up for selective service? I can't see when he received the EAD the first time.

So he can't find his old EADs. He never filed I-9 forms with his company so there is no record of them. They never asked for it. He says he was never out of status but he can't remember renewing his EAD cards every year. So now I am reviewing everything, and it doesn't look too good.

I don't think they'd have given him GC if he was ever out of status...but I kind of want to make sure with my own eyes.
 
don't worry about out of status time, it does not matter anymore.

No. He wouldn't have to sign up until he actually becomes a permanent resident alien (or an illegal alien). As long as he was here on a non-immigrant visa, he didn't have to sign up. USCIS only looks at the date he got his GC.

That is a curious way to refer to your own mother : my husbands mother-in-law
