Loosing your green card in case of a too long stay in Canada

hey, well, that may 1st concelation helped me to finaly figure out what I wanted to do in life (if no cancelation, i would still be in usa but with no concrete plan... so thanks DOS... & i was a former winner).
Even if I win again on july 15, I decided to stick with my first plan which was university in Montreal (I got the welcome letter for september 2011 for microelectronic engineer courses... hehe pays a lot).
So, concidering the homeland security do not even check at the candian border, Do you think that I will still benefit my green card if i spend like 4 months in canada for a semester, come back to usa then the next semester go back to canada?
Because when I left the usa to go back to montreal, the US custom didn't check, they weren't even there, just the canadian one so basicaly they didn't know i left the country, they just know when you enter it so is it safe?

ps:
Knowing that even with the green card I would have to pay about 15 000$ per semester for a good university while in canada as a french citiezen I only pay 1 100$ per semester (in Québec)... I still can go every two to three week ends in new york to see my girlfriend

i travelled for a job interview to canada while I already had the GC in my hand. On the way back to the US the officer at the POE in toronto airport made it very clear to me: "If you get a job there, we will take your GC back!"
so, i had to reject the job offer from Toronto. In preinciple, you can travel to canada w/o having been detected by INS, but it is a risky move as Canada fully cooperates with US DOS. Good luck!

I know in airport they check but by the road they don't. Canadian citizen do not even need a passeport to go to usa by road, but they do need one if they go by plane
When I was in bufallo on my way back to canada (bus), the canadian officer didn't type anything on his computer, he just looked at my study permit & gave me my passeport back.
that is why i am concidering & since usa & canada have a accord for student, american resident student have some privilege in canada but i do not know what

I don't know where you get this info from but Canadians and US citizens need a passport to travel between countries. By road included. They might not type anything at the border but a valid passport is still needed.

nope, even for the plane, it recent the need of a valid passeport for canadian citizen when go by plane.
Entry into Canada is solely determined by Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) officials in accordance with Canadian law. Please see the CBSA’s website for details. Canadian law requires that all persons entering Canada carry both proof of citizenship and proof of identity. A valid U.S. passport, passport card or NEXUS card (see below) satisfies these requirements for U.S. citizens.

this one state that a us citizen only need a goverment issued ID to enter canada...

they check your arse up to make sure you are not traveling illegally. Travelling to canada is easy, agreed. However, it will be a hell to come back by land/sea/or air to the US.

I know that if you are illegal then it will be hard, but me i have a french passeport so going back & forth is just a formality as long as I do not overstay. In april I went twice in USA
the first time I was nervous because I forgot to leave my degrees back home, I always keep them in my bag & forgot to removed them so when the agent in bufallo saw it, she became souspicious, I had to proove her that i would come back & I did but was quite hard... next time, they checked my passeport without even asking where would I stay, & in 1 minute I was done, they gave me a ticket to show the security to get back in the bus heading to new york

You would need a student visa to study in Canada right? So every time you would come back to the US, they would see it. That's where the problem is.

I do not need a student visa to study in canada, just a piece of paper that allow me to study (studing permit) but no visa... & even if they ask about it, i could say that I got it before getting the green card

if you are such a smart-a$$, why bother asking ppl in this forum?

To cross the US/Canadian border you need to have a valid passport or passport card. This rule is just in force this year. Previously any government issued photo ID was ok. If you are travelling with a passport from a country that uses the visa wavier program you need to pre authorize with an ESTA filing online. If you have a green card and are not spending a majority of you time in the US you may lose your green card at any attempt to enter the US

That's what i wanted to know, so the canadian customs share their data with the homeland security?
I will just transfert my credit in usa then (IF I win the lottery & do get the green card)
