Lawyers!!! Can you believe it...

All money making lol
The poor people ! I wonder how much they charge for simple cases like these ?

Wow - that is disgraceful. Mind you, the lawyers (as we have discussed before) really have little or no idea about DV - so perhaps they can claim ignorance as a defense for their false advice.

Look at these guys...
http://www.avvo.com/legal-answers/selected-for-dv-lottery-winner-and-my-case-number--1726403.html

Simple case and more than one lawyer on there saying she has a better chance if she goes to do AOS and hires a lawyer!! This is just plain false. Do these guys actually believe what they say or are they just looking for business? Personally I think this is unethical posting - as it's completely misleading to the questioners.

Unfortunately, I've seen and read so much about DV cases that nothing shocks me any more these days. The main reason most of them post on avvo is really to advertise their services/business. No doubt a couple of them have some ideas about DV cases, it however pales in comparison to the advice we give here free of charge when it comes to straight forward cases such as that of the person asking about their sister's chance. And like you rightly noted, it is highly unethical!

LONG STORY:
Here in Venezuela, some "immigration" office claims to help you with DV. They charge you 1500$ for 5 or 10 (I don't know which) years of "try" (Meaning: they fill the application for you). They don't give you the CN, but a number by them. They even have a VIP package (I guess with that you have more chances??? Damn!)

I think they really went too far when this year they issued a press release about the results and telling that "Venezuela have a Record of selectees in SA" "More selectees than ever" (not true, actually almost 400 less than 2014) and that all this was possible thanks to their help and that they are "available" to help you complete the process to guarantee that your selection will become a GC. They are the ones that know how to get you ready for the interview, for ONLY 750$ extra. Oh! and that is in AMERICAN DOLLARS, in this country witha a very strict exchange policy. FYR a minimun wage in Venezuela is about $52,58/MONTH.

I just needed to take that out of my throat! I almost send a press release too, telling the press that they are lying.

Not only in Venezuela. Same scam is being perpetuated in most parts of Africa. And the unfortunate thing is that people tend to believe them. Such a shame!

A guy on our local forum who entered through an agency said they called him when he won to assure him he would have a much better chance to apply through them/their lawyers, I think he said they asked for $2000....

The misfortune of some make the fortune of others !
In his case that will play on your favour vero ! Because you will have a lot of second-hole from venezuella, because those agencies even if you play once by them they will still keep on reapplying you every year so I'm sure there is lots of winners that can't pay the fees and they will surely not pursue the US dream !
Speaking about dream lol
good night to all :)

In my initial googling before getting to these forums I saw some posts on Avvo which were crap. I think the way Avvo is set up, lawyers can get business through it, so it really encourages them to scare innocents into thinking they need them.

I've seen other sites which were a bit better in terms of lawyer answers. But in the end, as everyone here is saying, lawyers aren't needed for DV cases and would instead get in the way.

On May 1st when I first saw I got selected, I phoned up a lawyer I used for my old L1 visa in the US 10 years ago. His receptionist took my card info and said it would be $250 for a phone consult.

I asked the lawyer a few questions and he stopped me and joked "Don't worry about it. Get your documents, and if you show up breathing for the interview you'll get your visa.". He never charged me the $250.

I'm assuming our forum boss has scruples like the guy Zuroma mentions.

Hey, I've never seen Mr. @Rajiv S. Khanna offering his services to anyone here, except in the matters to put this forum to work. That's why I respect him.

I think the worst part of the agencies thing is that they make people believe that without them, you are toasted... But I don't know anybody who have won through them though

This thread seems to answer my question… I was wondering if my spouse and I (she is selected for the DV-2015 EU434XX in France) would have better chance not to commit errors in the process by hiring san attorney or lawyer. The organism wich we use in the first part to subscribe on the lottery (Green Card US Global) propose us to help us for all the process for 3000$ for a couple! But they does'nt seem very trustful… So according to you all, we don't have to look for an attorney at all? Thanks you in advance….
