L1 to H1 conversion

Hi, Can some one please help me getting answer of these questions:

1. I am on L1 and want to apply for a H1 through a consulting company. Do I have to submit my I94 immediately at the time of filing H1?

2. How and when do I have to get my status changed from L1 to H1? How do I notify USCIS?

3. What if I want to continue with L1 even after I get H1. Can I keep that H1 for later period of time? In other words, I want to wait for a suitable opportunity to get my status adjusted?

A copy of I 94 is suffienct.

2. How and when do I have to get my status changed from L1 to H1? How do I notify USCIS?

Transfer does not take place automatically, you have to apply for new H1 by April 1 if approved you will be allowed to work by Oct 1 2007 under year 2008 quota. Once your H1 is approved your status gets changed from L1 to H1. You have to pay all the fees $1440 minimum to USCIS


3. What if I want to continue with L1 even after I get H1. Can I keep that H1 for later period of time? In other words, I want to wait for a suitable opportunity to get my status adjusted?
Once your L1 is chnaged to H1 you are no more with L1 status.

Thank for the reply. Just one more clarification please:

Is it possible that I file for new H1 on April 1st through my consulting compnay but do not want to switch over it (after approval) from L1 due to some unforeseen conditions. If yes, then how can I prevent status adjustment from L1 to H1 till a certain period of time?

In other words, I do not want to get my status change automatically as soon as I get approval. How can I go for this?
