L1-B/ LABOR CERT. Time Running out

Hello,
I am new!!!. Need help. I know someone (a very good friend of mine) in L-1B with an approved labor cert. EB-3 category. His employer just filed the I-140. However, because his category is EB-3 he will be pushed back. His L-1B expires next year.

What are my friend's options? Can his employer filed a change of status from L-1B to L-1A? If it can be done, will this change of status affect my friend's labor Certification/I-140 status in the future, when his visa number becomes available?
If change of status is allowed, does this means, employer will need to file a new labor cert for the new higher position my friend now performs? or no?

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

that is one way and another is changing to H1B.

No affect.

No new LC is necessary unless job duty changed.
