Joining date and date of obtaining TN status

I am planning to apply for my TN status at one of the NJ ports of entry (land) on a specific date. That date is same as the joining date quoted in my TN offer letter - my job is in SFO. I have convinced my employer that I can join only 2-3 days later and I am flying out from Canada only one day after my actual joining date in the company. Will this cause any issues? What do I tell the immigration officer if he asks how I can make it on land (car travel) to LA the same day? Kindly advise.
 
Unless you are flying from outside US to NJ, you cannot apply at a POE. You need to be entering US.

The starting date on your letter is unimportant, as long as you do not work before getting TN.
 
I think it kind of matter, but 2-3 day is not a big deal.

I had a friend who was rejected because the start date on the TN letter is 3 weeks before he was applying.
