One does not always need an employer-sponsor to obtain a GC.
No, you apply for citizenship on your own. No need of sponsor. The only thing close to it is that if you apply based on marriage to a US citizen the marriage has to still exist throughout the application process. For people applying based on 5 years of permanent resident there is no external dependency on jobs or on needing some sort of sponsor.

No job is needed for naturalization. In fact, some jobs may make you ineligible for naturalization. Ex: working for in a foreign country with a foreign company, working as a pimp or any other job that involves illegal activities.
