Job Title for TN1 Visa

Hi,

I am so thankful I found this forum! I have a question about the job title I should put on my employment letter. I will soon be applying for a TN1 visa to work as a periodontist. Periodontist is a specialist in dentistry (just like cardiologist is a physician that specializes in the heart). Dentist is listed in the Appendix of the NAFTA treaty as a professional that will qualify for TN employment, but periodontist is not. In my employment letter, should I state my job title as a dentist? Or is it ok to state my job as a periodontist?

Really appreciate any help I can get! Thanks!

Your letter should state that you are requesting TN under the dentist category. It should then describe your duties, breifly, as a periodontist.

If they can't make the link betwen the 2, they will simply look up the job in their manuals and see that it is an obvious fit.

You have nothing to worry about.

Thanks Nelson. I have read many other posts and all of them emphasized that the job title on the employment letter needs to be exactly the same as what on the NAFTA list. So to clarify, can I put:

My job title: Dentist
My job description: A dentist that specializes in the treatment of periodontal diseases and implant surgeries

Should I just not mention the word "periodontist" in my letter? What if the custom officer asks me whether I am in fact working as a periodontist? Will I get into trouble for only stating my job title as a dentist?

Thanks!

The internal job title given you by your sponsor is unimportant. That is why I stressed that you are applying for a TN under a specifc category.

So your TN letter should say TN category: Dentist.

So then describe your DUTIES. and here the exact internal job title can be specified if it sheds light on your duties. But the job title is unimportant, contrary to what you have been reading.
The category and the duties are what counts.

You cannot work as a periodontist without being a dentist, can you? So you have nothing to worry about.
You do realize that there are only 3 dozen TN categories. I don;t know anyomne who's job title is simply "engineer", yet with all these titles, they all apply inder the engineering category.

It's even simpler for you r category.

I see. Thank you very much! I am thinking of buying a TN kit to help guide me through the application process. What do you think about those online kits? I received my DDS degree in Canada and the specialist certificate in US, and my employer is a private periodontal practice in US. Is my case not so complex that I can do it myself? Or would you recommend hiring a lawyer?

Thanks!
