Hi everyone!!! On 2007-2008 I was an exchange student for 1 academic year. Then I returned home about 3 months, I applied for an F-1 student visa on 2008 till current. I'm planning to get married with my fiance, who is a US citizen. My question is that when i was on J1 visa, I have the 2 years residency requirement. Yet, I haven't completed this requirement yet since I was in my country only for 3 months.
+ so would that 2 years RR would stop me from living with my gf? Do i have to leave US after married? I really need your help =(

Your green card application will be rejected if you haven't stayed outside the US for 2 years in your home country or gotten a waiver of the 2-year requirement. But you can continue your F1 studies with or without the waiver; getting married doesn't mean you have to leave.

However, after you get married, if you leave the US even for a short trip, you may be unable to return with the F1 visa.

Thanks for your response..
How do i get a Waiver of the 2 years RR?
I'm considering of hiring an attorney. Would he be able to get the Waiver for me?

@Lucy:
Amongst the 5 options for the waiver:
which is the easiest way to get? I heard it's an Objection Letter,but i'm not really sure what that is.
I was an exchange student for grade 12 in 2007-2008.

It is called a NO OBJECTION LETTER from the sponsoring government. In the letter, the government acknowledges that the person who is requesting the waiver is a parasite, who used public funds with the promise to contribute their knowledge and experiences for the betterment of their communities, but unfortunately, they want to abrogate that noble commitment to remain in the US with their new spouse. In addition, he or she will blacklisted forever as a pariah in their country. So, the government has decided to release the person from that obligation due to their newly found lover and future spouse....lol!!!

Jesse, you will get all the information you need on J-1 waivers in the J-1 subforum.

Don't pay attention to Al.
