J1 Overstay - Reentry

Hope this is OK to ask - related to immigration.

I had a J1 student visa back in 2003 - met a girl and stayed over the 90 days by a few months. I came home OK and thought nothing more about it. I have booked my first trip since to the USA for January.

Question is could I get into bother going back for the overstay even if it was 5 years ago. With having to give information in advance would they tell you if there was going to be a problem with entry? Would hate to be refused entry over something like that. If that was to happen do they just put you on the next plane back or are things more serious?

Thanks

Nearly 4 months. Meant to be gone by September but stayed on until just before Christmas, if that makes a difference

I assuming that you left the United States on your own accord and were not deported. If so, have you applied for and been approved for a new visa yet? If so then you should have no problems because you are not subject to any bar to re-entry that I know of.

No I left as usual - wasn't deported or anything like that.

I haven't applied for a visa though - can use the visa waiver from here.
