Are you e-filing?

Check out the IRS website at www.irs.gov. They should have information here to help you and a local telephone number of someone to call.

If you have no luck, I suggest sending a cover letter with your return with copies of the ITIN card and SS card showing the transition. Of course, you mentioned you might e-file and in that case, this would probably not be possible.

Good luck.

That's the problem - the e-filing. Since you're going to have to send a piece of paper anyway, just file via regular mail this year and be done with it. Next year you'll be able to e-file without any issues.

If you have a refund coming and need the money, get your stuff in the mail as soon as you have all of your W-2s, 1099s and all that good stuff.

Once the SS Card is issued - it cancels out the prior ITIN number. You can not use it anylonger.

If e-filing of your 1040 does not go through - mail your tax return along with a statement referencing prior ITIN number and may be a copy of your new SS Card.

"Once the SS Card is issued - it cancels out the prior ITIN number. "

Is this ture? It sounds logical but I doubt that the two agencies works so efficiently.

I am also not sure that SS card issuance cancels ITIN. I know people who have both that are still in operation.

I would definitely recommend you do not e-file this year and send in hard copy documents. I would also recommend calling the IRS to make sure that things will be taken care of.

Hope this info from irs.gov helps

How do I know if I need an ITIN?
If you do not have an SSN and are not eligible to obtain an SSN, but you have a requirement to furnish a federal tax identification number or file a federal income tax return, you must apply for an ITIN. By law, an alien individual cannot have both an ITIN and an SSN.
IRS processes returns showing SSNs or ITINs in the blanks where tax forms request SSNs. IRS no longer accepts, and will not process, forms showing "SSA205c," "applied for," "NRA," blanks, etc.

I was not able to find out the procedure for cancelling Itin incase one obtains SSN later.

Thx
