I-551 is not a visa and hence may not be accepted.

EAD2003,

When you go for PS, they specifically inform you that you can use this as a stamp and can be used for travelling. I remember them saying that.

That is correct... i was also told by the officer who stamped my passport that this stamp is as good as green card and can be used for travelling in and out of the country. I am also leaving for India early next month via Amsterdam and still havent received the plastic card.

Ricky you did not mention of transit visa via Amsterdam? I guess it's not needed?

Also, when we leave USA, now that we dont' have I-94 cards does that mean the airline notifies USCIS of our departure? Do they track us with A#'s?

they must be tracking with A#'s. the only reason i booked a (expensive) ticket with KLM was that Amsterdam was the only country not needing a transit visa even on Advance parole.
my wife went last week via KLM with just I-551 stamp on her passport...no problems in Amsterdam while going to India (Delhi).

One caveat: the I-551 is as good as a Green Card for the purposes of re-entry to the United States. What other countries think of the stamp may be another matter altogether. CBP can use such a cheap and easily forged stamp because their computers can pull up the A# on the stamp and verify it. Other nations' immigration services may not be able to do so, and may require a transit visa.

As of France, they do need us to take the airport transit visa if you are travelling on 551. Drove down to DC today and got it stamped today itself. You don't have to go again to pick up your passport. It was quick, about an hour or so.
