As far as I know, you don't require one.
I also have my tickets booked via amsterdam, and this was one of the options that did not require transit visa.

plans were of travelling on advance parole when i booked my tickets.
but got approval on 10/29/2004 so will have to get the pp stamped. without that I don't think I will be able to leave. hopefully that is done before i leave, tickets are booked for 19th nov and got appointment for 16th nov.

that's great. you are not worried about I-551 rule that in future they might phase out this stamp? what if they do and we are out of the country!! unless someone is checking your mails and you'll get they'll mail cards to you india?

The I-551 is pretty useless anyways. As long as you have your A# then they can look you up in the computers on the way back. That's all they do with the stamp, read the A# off of it.

From all the information I am getting from this forum, I think it should be fine if they phase out while any of us in India. And always they have a record of the exit/entry dates. I don't think it should be a problem.
Do you think this will be a big problem?

Fedup and The Real C,

that's what i am gathering from this forum and othe forums is that it would be ok to travel. Somone just travelled on Oct 24th and was allowed back.

I was only concerned from INdian officials stand point of view as they may or may not honor it since it looks fake. But knowledgeable people on this forum mentioned that the stamp has special ink and it's recognizable elsewhere.

I am sure when we come back they'll have some way to allow us back into the coutry. For sure they have A#'s, and moreover some countries give information of arriving passangers upfront to US customs officials.

What record do they keep for exists since our I-94's our taken? Does AIrline informs that this particular A# has left?

Congrats Tufan!!!!

Tufan and Fedup,

See the above document posted by USCIS...looks like they will honor what they have issued already. As TheRealCanadian mentioned, the A# is important for POE officials here in the US. I am travelling at the end of
this month and haven't rcvd the cards yet....I am planning to take the curtsy approval copy I received from CIS at my address along with the I-551 stamp in the passport. I think we should be fine travelling on I-551 stamping.

BTW, anybody has any info if while traveling by Delta/Air-France I need any transit visa. Any comments/feedback would be great.

thanks!

Guys,

I travelled recently to India via Amsterdam on I-551 stamp. Unless we need to go out of airport we don't require any transit visa. In India while coming back the officer asked me if I have green card. When I told him that I have the I-551 stamp, he looked at it and put the departure stamp. No more questions asked.

Thanks fedupofwaiting,

I found the following info on the website you mentioned. I am just posting it for other ppl's benefit.

http://www.consulfrance-washington.org/visas/visasen.htm#8

------
REQUIREMENTS : AIRPORT TRANSIT VISA

Read GENERAL INFORMATION before applying.

No airport transit visa is required for holders of diplomatic, official or special passports, and for crewmembers on a mission if they are citizens of the countries which have signed the Treaty of the Chicago Convention (except for the USA, by reciprocity).

You do not need an airport transit visa unless you are holder of a passport or a refugee travel document issued by one of the following countries:
Afghanistan, Albania, Angola, Bengladesh, Burkina Faso (*), Cameroon (*) Rep.of Congo, Erythrée, Ethiopia, Gambia (*), Ghana, Guinea,(*) Haïti, India (*), Irak, Iran, Ivory Coast (*), Liberia, Libya, Mali (*), Nigeria, Pakistan, Senegal (*), Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syria(*), and Palestinians holders of a travel document for refugee which has been issued by Egypt, Lebanon or Syria.
However, no airport transit visa is required if the citizens of the above-mentioned countries have a "refugee travel document", an "alien residency card", or a "permit to reenter" (Form I-327 rev: 06-13-96) issued by the USA, or a permanent visa in either of the countries of the European Union, or a residence permit in Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Monaco, Andorra, the Holy See, San Marino, Canada or Japan. This document should authorize you to re-enter the mentioned country without conditions.

For citizens of the countries followed by the sign (*), the airport transit visa is not required, if they are holders of a valid visa issued by a country of the European Union and EEE (Germany, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Norway Portugal, Spain, The United-Kingdom, and Sweden), Canada, Switzerland and the USA.

As India is in the list and we have I-551 stamp along with the courtsy approval letter issued by USCIS, I think it should be ok.

Thanks!

courtsy letter of approval of I-485?

thanks for all the info.

Do we really need the courtsy letter for departure?

I-551 is not a visa and hence may not be accepted.

I will be travelling to Delhi via Paris and I'm also going on I551 stamp. I spoke to French Embassy in Washington, DC and was told unless you have the physical plastic card, you need the airport transit visa. I will be getting it next week sometime. You can walk in and they will stamp right there and then.
And about returning on I551 stamp, spoke to BCIS 1 minute back and they told me all you need is the 551 stamp which is the proof of your permanent resideny and a state photo ID (Drivers License) on the way back.

Hope this helps.

Thanks dipsite!!!!!

Now, that's what you call a first hand answer. That really helps....I will be going from Boston to Delhi at the end of this month using I-551. Even though my LUD changed two times 11/02 and then again 11/05 after two months of silence so there is a chance that I might get the card before travel but I will go get the transit visa stamp in any case in Boston when there is one week left for travel and I haven't rcvd the card. Do you need to take an appointment to get the transit visa, how much is the fee? Do they give you the visa same day or you have to go again second time. Please let us know the trasit visa stamp exp. once you are done....it would be surely helpfull.

thanks again for the info you provided!

PT and Dipsite, you guys are giving information about transit visa for French Embassy right?

I am assuming this information does not apply to Netherland Consulate?
I went on the website of the embassy but couldn't find anything.
