Is physical presence in US needed for filing I-485?

Does any one know if physical presence is necessary in US for filing I-485 application? I was planning to go on a 3 week vacation to India in last week of May. But with the my priority date becoming current, I'm not sure if I should go out of US before filing for adjustment of status on June 1.

Thanks for the response. Few addtional questions

How long does it approximately take for USCIS to send the filing receipt after ther receive the I-485 application?

Can I go for consulate processing as I am already scheduled to travel to India.

Can I file for EAD along with the I-485 even though my H1-B visa is not stamped on my passport? Can I enter US after getting my H1B stamped? Or do I need to apply for advance parole?
