Is online status check useless?

I sent in my I485 package about a month ago and since I got the receipt, I have been checking my status daily plus I have email updates enabled and there has basically been no change. Today I get an email from my lawyer saying that he got the notice for me to go do my finger prints. Shouldn't the online status have reflected that or showed that at least there is a recent update on the file or anything? I am just curious what other people's experience with the online system has been

Also, my biometrics appointment is not until sept 3rd. Is there anyway I can make it sooner?

No update for FP on line, just appointment with few updated dates but no change of status online "pending"

USCIS is not updating all the status what it goes through the process....... Not sure who developed software what were their requirements
