Is it possible to take a break in the process?

We have our India trip booked for March 10th 2010 and we are planning to submit our N400 form by Nov 10th 2009. I’m bit curious to know whether we could still make it to Oath and getting Passport before March 1st week of 2010. Any suggestions? Is there a way to discontinue the process in the middle and re-start at later point of time? Which means after interview can I hold to my old passport and postpone the Oath ceremony until I come back from my trip? Please advise.

Delay FP by reschediling FP.
Delay interview by rescheduling interview.
Delay oath by rescheduling oath.

Each delay may add up to 3 months and you can delay the same thing up to 3 times so you can delay your process by totally 27 months

Yes, you can delay oath. Depending on your DO and case complexity, there is a chance you can get oath before you leave considering that March is 4 months away.

Another option is, apply after you come back. Where you have waited many years, wait 5 more months.

Validity of current passport after interview

Thanks so much for the quick response WBH! Would it backfire by any means, if we delay any of these process? Also, when do we surrender our Current passport? During the interview? If so, no passport until Oath ceremony is over and apply for new US passpor? If I decide to delay the Oath, Shall I still keep my current passport and visit India at that point?

If the US govt won't accept your passport, please mail it to my address. Here is goes:

12345 New Hampshire Drive
Silver Spring, MD 20905

I can always use it to visit Cuba...:)

Be careful, that passport can also land you near Cuba, in "Guantanamo Bay". :)

Thanks soooooooooooooooo much for all the quick, respectful, informative and witty responses. In spite of bit mortified with my own question around surrendering the passport, at least now I know the process and details.:)

You have to surrender your passport at your embassy and apply for OCI or PIO.
It's gonna take awhile to get one of those documents. You can surrender your passport and get Indian Visa in US Passport. You should be fine, and after your trip will be concluded apply for OCI.

BTW, surrender does not mean you lose the passport. All they are going to do is to put a stamp (or two) in the passport saying it is canceled and return it to you. Save your last Indian passport to establish former Indian nationality, if ever required.

Going to the OP's question, you will almost never be without travel documents except just after oath. After oath, if you have a week, you can get travel documents with some effort. Rest of the time (before FP, before interview), if your schedule does not work - you can always request for reschedule with the risk of a 2-3 month delay.
