Is DV-2014 the last year for the diversity lottery?

I heard the diversity visa lottery is cancelled. I know it went through the House, but did it pass the Senate already?
Is there any truth to the rumor?

No it will not. Senate approval is not the final stage. It's got to go through the President too. It's a long way from being final!

It will be entirely unfair if they cancel the lottery draw before they have a replacement already approved and ready to go.

It has to be signed into law by the incumbent president at the time so for the time being it'll still go on.

If the Immigration Bill is approved by the Senate and then signed by the President (which he will sign as his party proposed it), they will have a replacement for the lottery. Most probably not something like Canada and Australia, but the immigration bill itself is a replacement of the US broken immigration system.

It's unfair as well that people already working legally in the US have to wait up to 10 years to get their green cards, isn't it?

When is the senate going to vote?

There's no fixed date or anything. The so called revised immigration bill is being tossed around in the Senate at the moment for fine tuning if you know what I mean.

Relax the DV will still be going on...

here is an explanation what will happen with lottery...

[...]but it eliminates the Green Card Lottery. Specifically, the repeal of the lottery takes effect October 1, 2014. Page 275 reads as follows:

An alien who receives a notification from the Secretary that the alien was selected to receive a diversity immigrant visa under 21 section 203(c) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (8 U.S.C. 1153(c)) for fiscal year 2013 or fiscal year 2014 shall remain eligible to receive such visa under the rules of such section, as in effect on September 30, 2014.

Some interpret this to mean the lottery would be eliminated beginning with the calendar year 2014 lottery since registrants in the upcoming lottery in October 2013 ("DV-2015") will receive notification they will be selected for further processing in May 2014, which is well within the September 30, 2014 cut off.

However, another interpretation is that since the 100,000 initial selectees will not be interviewed for the 55,000 available visas until October 1, 2014 (at the very earliest), therefore, no actual selection will have been made. If this interpretation is correct, then last year’s 2012 lottery ("DV-2014") was the last year of the lottery. Hopefully, clarification will be forthcoming[...].
