Interview Scheduled for green card... DIVORCE

A friend of mine, a permanent resident, got married to a woman who's been in and out of US on a tourist visa. He then filed a petition for her green card. The interview has been scheduled already, but he found out that she married him for immigration benefits and wants to divorce her.
What is the right way to do this. Should he send a letter to the embassy where the interview is going to take place in a month to cancel it?
 
He can do that. Has he already sent his spouse a fresh I-864 for the interview. If not, lack of an I-864 will guarantee that her visa will not be approved.

He has not sent the fresh I-864 to her, however, he'll send the letter to the embassy. Thank you for your response!
