what's the big deal?

As drafted, the proposal would require hospitals to inquire about patients’ immigration status.

I couldn't care less if I have to show proof of my immigration status and why should anyone else unless they are here illegally?

Many states already require this when renewing your drivers license etc....

You are already supposed to carry this proof with you at all times...

If this helps to catch people who are here illegally I'm all for it...

It is a big deal. The mission of Helath care provider is to provide service to the patient irrespective of their immigration status. The doctors cannot and should not discriminate. America is very big on human rights and getting appropriate care from the doctor is human right. The doctor should only worry about if he/she is going to get paid for his service either by insurance or cash or somehow.

I also believe that doctor/hospital only need to worry about providing health care. Looks like doctor/hospital are going to ask for immigration status before providing service.

In case of emergency, many people might not have proof and they will suffer most. I hope they have thought about emergency scenario before pushing something like this.

Overall: Not a good idea.

UPDATE: ER patients won't be asked their immigration status

The Bush administration is backing off plans to require hospitals to ask emergency room patients their immigration status, after hospitals and advocates for immigrants protested.

The hospitals and immigrant groups said the questions would make people afraid to seek care and lead to serious public health problems.
