Indian Passport Renunciation

Hello All,

My N-400 just got approved last week and I had a couple of questions on renunciation of my Indian nationality.

  • I indicated name change on the N-400 application. When filling out the renunciation application with Travisa, do I need to specify my name on the Indian passport or the name on the Naturalization cert ?

  • Travisa indicates that a "Renunciation Cert" will not be issued if the Passport's not surrendered physically [indiavisa.travisaoutsourcing.com/renunciation/display-requirements]. Is this correct ? Do I need a renunciation certificate ?

  • My Indian Passport expired about 4 years ago. However, when my passport expired, I was an LPR. Is this going to be a problem? I never traveled outside the US, so couldn't really justify needing a renewed Indian passport.

1. when you fill out the renunciation form, the name must match whatever is in the passport. so your old indian name will be written.
2. renunciation certificate and cancelled passport with the stamp stating, "Passport cancelled up on acquiring US or foreign nationality" is the same thing. a renunciation cert. is just a piece of paper... if you don't get it back from travisa, then the cancelled stamp stating the above info will be sufficient enough, but in any case, it will cost you 175 bucks.
Up on acquiring US nationality, one must surrender the INdian passport at the nearest indian embassy 'cause India doesn't allow dual citizenship and it's against the law to hold a valid Indian passport or renew it after acquiring US nationality or foreign nationality

3. this could be a problem as travisa is full of greedy bastards... read the reviews on yelp. they were making almost everyone pay 250 bucks in penalty fee over some stupid thing... I hope you can get lucky on that.

But in any case you will need to get the renunciation paperwork taken care of, or they will not issue you a visa.
This is in the wrong section... you have high chances of getting more replies if you post in under the OCI section as these matters have already been discussed there plenty of times,
Good LUck

@speakamericano. Thank you for the quick response. I thought I was nuts in thinking that 175 + processing is waaay too much to give up your Indian nationality and get a 8x11 piece of paper, but you confirmed my rationale.
Quick note aside, how do I move this thread to the OCI section ?

You won't have to pay a penalty because you didn't wait after you were naturalised to renounce citizenship. My passport expired in 2005 and I got citizenship this year. I now have an Indian entry visa.

@brokenflea... you can't move the thread ... only a moderator can do it... but from now on if you have any questions on renunciation/visa/oci..you can post them under OCI threads

those who were naturalized before may or june 2010 benefited from that article. they pay 20 bucks.. if you naturalized after june 1 2010 then you pay 175.
