Incorrect I94 expiration entered at the airport

Just checking to see if anyone in this forum experienced this and requesting to share their experience

I have two TNs.

First one issued on Jan 4, 2021 - valid until Jan 3, 2024 - got this at Peace Bridge POE - I stopped working for this employer in May, 2022.
Second one issued on Feb 7, 2022 - valid until Feb 6, 2025 - got this at Ambassador Bridge POE - actively working for this employer since Feb 2022.

First TN, the officer stamped the passport with validity till Jan 3, 2024
Second TN, the officer stamped the passport with validity till Feb 6, 2025 (my passport expiration date is Jun 23, 2023 - officer indicated that he stamping the full validity even though passport is expiring earlier, however, once passport is renewed, come back, I will update it in the system). With this even though the stamp is valid till Feb 6, 2025, the I-94 showed validity of my second TN matched with the passport expiration date (Jun 23, 2023)

Last week, I went on to a short trip out of USA and returned through DFW airport in Texas. The officer asked the status and I said TN1, he took the passport and entered some date in there and quickly returned my passport back and said you are good. I came out of the airport and out of curiosity I checked the online I-94, and saw the I94 validity date changed to my old TN1 validity date 9Jan 3, 2024), looks like he entered the first TN validity date and not the second one as he didn't turn the passport page to see the new stamp in there.

I went and met Deferred Inspection Office within DFW airport to correct the I94 validity date, the officer was bit rude, took my passport and also the paper work I presented for my second TN. Took some time and entered something in the systems, came back and said, I updated the name and I cannot change the I94 validity date as you didn't present the paperwork to the officer when you passed through the airport. Its a surprise that the officer didn't ask for any paperwork, and didn't have this experienced when I went out of US couple of times and re-entered through airports. The officer also said, since the corporate office of our company is located in IL, I should work only in IL and not TX (even though there is no geographical restrictions on TN) and gave my passport back. I rechecked the I94 online and the validity is still shown with my first TN.

I am thinking of renewing my passport soon and go to border with the documentation I presented for my second TN as originally requested by the border officer to get full validity of my second TN. I am hoping that trip to border will correct all the mess created at the airport.

Any thoughts/experience around this will be appreciated, thanks

It's possible to do. I once went back to the POE and had the agents update my I-94 expiry date. (I think they actually issued a new I-94). I was nervous about challenging them so I went when I knew it was a quiet time and also when I knew the original officer was there (to avoid any suspicion of 'officer shopping').

it was a legitimate mistake on their part, I explained myself a few times. Eventually they did enough research on their own to agree with me, and issued a new one.

Thanks! I was surprised, the officer at deferred inspection didn't updated the "Admit To" date, simply updated the name and left the date as is. I will renew the passport and go to Border to fix this all together. Will share the experience here once done.

In your case the I-94 date is indeed wrong, so it needs to be changed in the manner suggested, when convenient for you, but when anyone has a paper I-94 with the correct date they want on it (one should always print out and keep with passport the I-94 issued at the time a TN is obtained) , and your work situation has not changed, i would not worry about any online version that they may issue on a future entry.

@CDN9
Renew your passport, step out of the country, make U turn and come back & if they ask tell them you want I-94 update, now that you have new passport.

Thanks nelsona! The officer at the airport not turning one extra page in the passport to see the latest TN stamp, instead entered the old TN expiration date caused all this. Once the renewed passport is in, I will go to border and get it corrected, will make sure take a print of the new I 94 and attach in the passport.

Thanks, thats the plan for now, will post the update here
Just wanted to provide an update and share my experience.

I renewed my Canadian passport and went to border at Detroit PoE. Officer asked the purpose of the trip, explained him that passport renewed and need an I94 with full validity as the previously issued one limited to the old passport expiration date. He sent me inside the office.

One of the officer called me in, explained everything to him, he asked me to go wait for few mins and then handed me over the passport and said you are good to go. I opened the passport and saw a stamp with B1/B2 with 6 months validity, I was shocked and explained him again, looks like another officer around heard the conversation and came in, asked the officer to redo the transaction and issue TN with original full validity as the B1 overridden the original TN.

The officer took some time and corrected the transaction, strikes off the B1 and added a new stamp with TN and full validity date. He asked me to check online after few hours to have the updated info.

The officer tried to charge 6 dollars, the other officer explained him that the fee was already paid when I got the TN, so no need to pay again as this is just an info update.

After coming out, I checked online I94, its shows correct status and validity. Since this is with new validity date, I will send out a copy for my employers records.

None of the officers talked about the interaction I had with CBP deferred site at DfW airport.
