In US with L1: Can I travel(with L1) while my H1 is still under process?

I came to US with my L1(valid until 2008). I have applied for a fresh H1(in apr 2007) with a different employer. Can I travel out of US now with my valid L1, while my H1 is still under process?
 
Yes, but you have to have H1 stamp and enter the US with it before you start working for H1 sponsor.

I was initially thinking of making a quick international travel with my valid L1 and as soon as the H1 papers were ready, I thought of switching the company from here so that I have enough work-experience with my new company before leaving for H1 stamping.

Now looks like I have to stamp my H1 before working with the new employer(assuming that I make the international visit now). I guess, this is all because of the fact that my I94 is getting updated while I make the Intl visit, right?

The reason to be that departing the US during pending change of status application leads USCIS considering that you abandon COS application.
